SUMMARY:CFA NY Presents with Chris Cutler - A Conversation on East Africa
DESCRIPTION:CFA NY Presents with Chris Cutler – A Conversation on East AfricaWednesday September 23\, 2015 \nEast Africa is now rated the most dynamic growth areas in Africa and their growth performance in the past decade has been impressive. SUMMARY:3rd Global Infrastructure Conference
DESCRIPTION:Global Infrastructure Conference Series3rd Global Infrastructure ConferenceFriday November 6\, 2015  \nThe World Economic Forum reported a trillion-dollar gap in infrastructure spending globally. In America\, a country facing what has been termed a legitimate infrastructure crisis\, government spending on transportation\, energy\, water and wastewater\, and social infrastructure\, has hit a 20-year low despite a call by U.S. President Barack Obama to create a federal infrastructure bank that would provide funding for badly needed projects. \nInfrastructure—be it transportation infrastructure such as roads\, bridges and airports\, or “midstream” energy like pipelines—is vital for national economic prosperity\, supporting goods\, services and the workforce. But in the U.S. as well as worldwide\, public funding to build and repair infrastructure is scarce\, resulting in the need for private capital and creating opportunities for long-term investors in “real” assets. At the same time\, the intersection of technology and business drivers will possibly shape the momentum towards a changing investment climate in the coming years. \nCFA Society New York’s 3rd Annual Global Infrastructure conference will once more bring together leading executives\, analysts\, portfolio managers and investors in thought-provoking discussions on both the long term and near term outlook for the infrastructure industry with multiple panels across Power\, Oil & Gas\, Water\, Transport and emerging markets’ infrastructure. The panels and keynote addresses will explore sectorial themes as they relate to project pipelines and deal flow in 2015\, breakdown of financing and funding tools and upcoming opportunities with the ever-shifting legal and political landscape worldwide. Join the speakers and network with 200 industry professionals to discuss the global infrastructure deficit\, the market appetite for public-private investment in infrastructure and how infrastructure assets can benefit institutional portfolios. \nWho Should Attend\nPortfolio managers and research analysts employed at asset management firms\, investment banks\, hedge funds\, mutual funds\, and insurance companies\, as well as pension plan sponsors; professionals working at potential participants on the issuance side\, including corporations and private equity firms; and service providers such as attorneys\, consultants\, and rating agency personnel. \nAgenda\n8:00 AM\nRegistration and Continental Breakfast \n8:25 AM\nWelcome\nDaniel Dagen\, CFA\,‎ President and CEO\, CFA NY \n8:30 AM\nKeynote Speaker\nWalter Winrow\, Managing Director\, Moody’s Global Project and Infrastructure Finance Group \n8:45 AM\nPower Panel\nThe power and energy complexes have an estimated $18 trillion of projected spending earmarked to be spent over the next 15 years. SUMMARY:Insurance Company Chief Investment Officers Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThis event is in-house and is not being broadcasted‎ nor recorded. No media will be present and speaker or attendee attribution\, in any form\, is a violation of CFA NY’s code of conduct. \nEven though we’re no longer in a Zero Interest Rate Policy environment\, interest rates remain “lower for longer” in the United States and Insurance companies are faced with some key questions on how to sustain investment premiums\, targeted spreads and profitability. Add to the mix\, negative to low interest in Europe & Japan\, emerging market headwinds\, global growth concerns and stock-market volatility\, and the opportunities for yield appear to be limited. According to The National Association of Insurance Companies (NAIC)\, a majority of U.S. insurance industry investments are in bonds with 53.06% or $2.16 trillion in corporate bonds. Research by the Chicago Fed points to increased correlation of insurers’ stock returns to the US treasury yield compared to pre-2007. Consequently\, there is an ongoing shift in asset mix as insurers are reaching out to asset managers with specialties in both traditional and alternative asset classes to maximize total return. Clearly\, this issue has been on the minds of Insurance companies’ Chief Investment Officers and their investment teams. At CFA NY’s Insurance CIO Conference\, you will hear directly from the investment officers of major Insurance firms on their outlook for 2016 and how they’re uniquely covering investment shortfalls through alternative investments\, financial hedges\, product restructuring and more. \nAgenda\nAgenda:\n5:30 PM: Check-in \n6:00 PM: Welcome and Thank You to Thomas Brigandi and his team of industry leader volunteer organizers\nAlex Urdea\, CFA\, FRM\, CMT\, Chairman\, CFA NY Board of Directors \n6:02 PM: Opening Comments\nPatrick Holert\, CFA\, CAIA\, Board Liaison to CFA Institute and Membership\, CFA NY \n6:05 PM: Keynote Address\nWilliam Riegel\, Senior Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer\, TIAA-CREF Asset Management \n6:20 PM: Panel \nModerator\nDoug Niemann\, Senior Managing Director\, The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America \nSpeakers\nGeoffrey Cornell\, CFA\, Deputy Chief Investment Officer\, American International Group\, Inc\nJae Yoon\, CFA\, Chief Investment Officer\, New York Life Investment Management\nMichael Buthe\, CFA\, Chief Investment Officer\, ACE Group Life Investments\nJoe Dodi\, CTP\, Director\, Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NJ \n7:40 PM: Closing Remarks\nDeepika Sharma\, CFA\, Asset Owner Series Co-Lead Volunteer Organizer\, CFA NY \n7:45 PM: Adjournment and Reception\nDaniel Dagen\, CFA\, CEO\, CFA NY \nWho should attend?\nPortfolio managers and research analysts employed at asset management firms\, investment banks\, hedge funds\, mutual funds\, and insurance companies\, as well as pension plan sponsors; professionals working at potential participants on the issuance side\, including corporations and private equity firms; and service providers such as attorneys\, consultants\, and rating agency personnel. \nCFA NY expects all attendees to comply with CFA NY’s Code of Conduct while attending CFA NY events or meetings. SUMMARY:Single Family Office Conference
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThis event is in-house and is not being broadcasted‎ nor recorded. No media will be present and speaker or attendee attribution\, in any form\, is a violation of CFANY’s code of conduct. \nA high-level discussion on major investment themes and global market dynamics from the perspective of single family offices. Single family offices are by definition running one family’s capital. They are therefore inherently not commercial in the sense that they are not looking to run third party capital and consequently generally prefer to be opaque and obscure investors and allocators. It is not often that third parties are given the opportunity to peak behind their proverbial ‘hoods.’ This panel will provide a rare glimpse at the allocators\, their methodologies\, investments and market views. It is not every day that one has the opportunity to gain first degree insight into the single family office space. \nAgenda\nAgenda\n5:30 PM: Check-in \n6:00 PM: Welcome and Opening Comments\nChristopher Cutler\, Board of Director\, CFANY \n6:05 PM: Keynote Address\nJohn Andrew Levin\, Chief Executive Officer\, Portfolio Manager\, and Chairman\, Levin Capital Strategies\, L.P. \n6:30 PM: Panel\nModerator\nMichael Oliver Weinberg\, Chief Investment Strategist\, Protege Partners\, and adjunct Associate Professor of Economics and Finance\, Columbia Business School \nSpeakers\nAndrew Eberhart\, Chief Investment Officer\, Heinz Family Office\nAnthony E. Ambrose\, CFA\, CIO UJA-Federation of New York’s Endowment and Retirement Plans\nMichael Reist\, CFA\, CIO\, Phillips Academy in Andover\nJainen Thayer\, CFA\, CIO Oberlin College \n7:35 PM Adjournment and Reception\nDaniel Dagen\, CFA\, CEO\, CFANY \nDescription\nAs Endowments and Foundations are faced with a challenging return environment and higher market volatility\, the outlook for future returns seems muted when compared to their impressive record of double digit growth generated in the recent past. Most are responding to the lack of readily evident market opportunities by investing in longer-term opportunities such as alternatives\, exploring private markets and turning to strategic partners. According to the latest Nacubo-Commonfund study on endowments\, the share of alternatives among endowments with over $1bn has doubled in the last decade. This shift has been marked by innovative portfolio themes in the space that include a focus on uncorrelated investments\, tail risk hedges\, investing in Venture capital etc. which will be discussed by the CIOs and senior investment managers of major Endowments & Foundations at this evening conference. \nIn addition\, we will navigate how these nonprofit organizations are managing multiple objectives and are becoming increasingly focused on risk\, managing short-term liquidity and due-diligence in manager selection. As Endowments and Foundations seek to take a more hands-on approach to investment management and increase the complexity of their portfolios by moving into new markets\, their perspectives and approach towards these goals offer a valuable lesson for investors. \nThis event will discuss:\n\nHow has the endowment model of investing changed in the post-crisis era?\nWhat new approaches to asset allocation are CIOs considering?\nDo alternative investments really add value to the portfolio?

At the same time\, the intersection of technology and business drivers will possibly shape the momentum towards a changing investment climate in the coming years. \nCFANY’s 4th Annual Global Infrastructure conference will once more bring together leading executives\, analysts\, portfolio managers and investors in thought-provoking discussions on both the long term and near term outlook for the infrastructure industry with multiple panels across Power\, Oil & Gas\, Water\, Transport and emerging markets’ infrastructure. The panels and keynote addresses will explore sectorial themes as they relate to project pipelines and deal flow in 2017\, breakdown of financing and funding tools and upcoming opportunities with the ever-shifting legal and political landscape worldwide. Join the speakers and network with 200 industry professionals to discuss the global infrastructure deficit\, the market appetite for public-private investment in infrastructure and how infrastructure assets can benefit institutional portfolios. \nDISCLAIMER OF ENDORSEMENT \nReferences herein to any specific sponsor or service do not necessarily constitute or imply the endorsement\, recommendation or favoring by CFA Society New York. SUMMARY:Second Annual Sovereign Wealth Conference
DESCRIPTION:Agenda\n5:45 PM: Check-in \n6:05 PM: Welcome and Opening Comments\nJonathan Prin\, CFA\, Greylock Capital \n6:15 PM: Panel\n\nModerator\nHan Yik\, Head of Institutional Investors at the World Economic Forum \nSpeakers\nAlex Greenbaum\, VP – Private Equity & Infrastructure\, GIC\nMarcia Favale\, Member\, Government Investment Council\, Kazakhstan\nNigel Gormly\, Head of International Direct Investment\, New Zealand Superannuation Fund\nIk Ho Suh\, Head of NY Office\, Korea Investment Corporation (KIC)\nMitch Williams\, CFA\, Global Head of Equities\, Wafra \n7:30 PM: Closing Remarks\nMaria Shtrapenina\, CFA\, TAG Associates LLC \nDescription\nSovereign Wealth Fund delegates to discuss their long-term capital management philosophy\, asset allocation approach and outlook for global markets. ‎Since the early 2000s\, the asset pool of Sovereign Wealth Funds has grown exponentially at around 20% CAGR as the number of funds established expanded to keep up with the commodities-led balance of payment surpluses. In recent months of extended commodity slump\, some of these Sovereign Wealth Funds have held steady whereas others have tapped into accumulated capital as mandated by their investment objectives. Even though usually clubbed together\, not all SWFs are alike and many differ profoundly in investment mandates and source of funds. However\, all Sovereign Wealth Funds\, whether structured as stabilization funds\, savings & development funds or reserve investments\, have an important role in macroeconomic management and global financial stability. In this context\, the long term investment horizon combined with a set-up that’s typically ever-green and not subject to liability concerns\, has led these funds to have unique asset allocation profiles. \n*All discussions at the CFANY Sovereign Fund Conference are governed by Chatham House rules. The event is closed to media and by invitation only to senior fund executives\, ensuring frank and productive discussions and an effective exchange of ideas among peers.

Such plans are common in sectors like the building trades\, where the workers move from job to job\, taking their benefits with them. The trucking\, retail and mining industries also have many multiemployer plans. ‎The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation estimates that about 10 million Americans are earning or receiving pensions from the roughly 1\,400 multiemployer defined benefit pension plans in the US.‎ While the financial crisis greatly impacted the funded status of these plans\, they have recovered significantly since 2009. ‎NYSSA’s First Annual Multiemployer Pension Conference will explore the perspectives of senior Multiemployer Pension investment professionals and how they are managing not only the volatile equity markets\, but also the low interest rate environment.

The typical large consultant group usually has a division between the field consultants and the research consultants. The field consultants are the ones who meet with the clients. The research department mainly compiles the performance and other relevant information about the managers. From this the research\, consultants provide the “short list” of approved managers that the field consultants use when they are assessing the best portfolio manager for a particular client. Investment consultants are highly influential in the institutional market. Cerulli Associates’ survey of institutional asset managers indicates that consultant-intermediated business accounts for just less than 60% of 2012 asset flows. Further segmentation of the data by firm size shows that consultant-generated business was greater for smaller firms with $10 billion or less in asset under management\, accounting for 75% of these firms’ asset flows. Conversely\, asset management firms with greater than $50 billion in AUM generated a little less than half of their new flows were consultant-intermediated. \nDISCLAIMER OF ENDORSEMENT \nReferences herein to any specific sponsor or service do not necessarily constitute or imply the endorsement\, recommendation or favoring by CFA Society New York. About $26 billion in green bonds came to market in the third quarter alone\, bringing the year-to-date global total to $63 billion. It is now expected that 2016 will be the best year on record\, with volume likely to exceed $80 billion. With China’s increasing commitments to the green bond market\, issuance could even reach $100 billion in 2016. While the growth rate has been impressive\, absolute green bonds volume still represents only a small fraction\, less than 1% by some estimates\, of the total worldwide fixed income market. \nGreen bonds have served as an important catalyst to focus attention on climate change and the collective actions that must be taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time\, the green bond market will have to achieve geometric growth if this segment of the bond market is to play a significant role in mobilizing capital toward environmental solutions. To achieve the Paris Climate agreement goal of limiting greenhouse gas emissions by holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2° Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5° Celsius above pre-industrial levels\, an unprecedented allocation of capital will be required to green the global economy. Estimates for the amount of climate finance needed for this transition vary widely\, but generally range from around $34-$114 trillion over the next 12 years. This\, by necessity\, will involve mobilizing public funds and also re-channeling a substantial flow of private capital towards sustainability projects. \nGreen bonds are expected to play an important role in such mobilization initiatives The event is intended to focus on current green market dynamics\, such as why we don’t see even higher levels green bond issuance\, but importantly\, it will address the factors that could further stimulate the future growth and development of green bonds in the US and overseas. \nWhat You Will Learn:\nThe evolution of\, in addition to the outlook for\, the green bond market\nUnderstanding and managing green bond risks\nGreen bond opportunities in the corporate bond market\nThe potential for green project bonds financing green infrastructure\nThe rise of green bond funds \nDISCLAIMER OF ENDORSEMENT \nReferences herein to any specific sponsor or service do not necessarily constitute or imply the endorsement\, recommendation or favoring by CFA Society New York. \nDISCLAIMER OF ENDORSEMENT \nReferences herein to any specific sponsor or service do not necessarily constitute or imply the endorsement\, recommendation or favoring by CFA Society New York. SUMMARY:The Euro: Political Experiment or Thousand-Year Currency?
DESCRIPTION:The Euro: Political Experiment or Thousand-Year Currency? \n  Wednesday\, May 3\n5:30 pm – 8:00 pm \n  \nRegister NowLocationCFANY Conference Center\n1540 Broadway #1010\, \nNew York\, NY 10036 \n  \nRegistration DeadlineTuesday\, May 2nd \nFees\n Members: $30\nNonmembers: $70 \n  \nSponsor\n The introduction of the Euro in the late 1990s was the fruition of decades of planning\, and held the hopes and dreams of several generations of Europeans. \nThe work of European statesmen\, politicians\, and their citizenry now appear at risk of permanent fracture\, if not comprehensive failure. Can the common currency survive the current political climate? Can Eurozone countries adapt to new pan-European realities? Will an intact Euro depend on fiscal union? Will the Euro thrive as a symbol of peace—after Europe’s most deadly century—or will it also succumb to the separate wills of nations? We will explore these and many other macroeconomic and geopolitical questions and points of view in the days before the seminal French election. \nAgenda5:45PM Registration \n6:05PM Opening Remarks \nHarumi Urata-Thompson\, CFA\, COO\, CFANY \n6:10PM Panel \nPoul Kristensen\, CFA\, CQF\, Managing Director\, Chief Economist\, Portfolio Manager\, New York Life Investment Management\nEbrahim Rahbari\, Managing Director\, Global Economics Team\, Citi Research\nLuca Passoni\, Independent Consultant\, Casa Lambert LLC\nRobert Lynch\, Global Head of Foreign Exchange Strategy\, JPMorgan Private Bank \nModerator: David Allen\, CFA\, Institutional Director\, Schroders \n7:20PM Closing Remarks \nDavid Allen\, CFA\, Institutional Director\, Schroders \n7:25PM Reception \n8:30PM Adjourn \nCFANY expects all attendees to comply with CFANY’s Code of Conduct while attending CFANY events or meetings. CFANY expressly reserves the right\, in its sole discretion\, to grant or deny access to any individual\, or to expel any individual from any CFANY event or meeting. \nDisclaimer\nThe CFA Society New York\, Inc. Investment managers voluntarily choose to abide by the GIPS standards – compliance is not mandated by any law or regulation. For many years\, GIPS compliance has been seen as an essential ingredient that can make or break a firm’s marketing efforts in terms of winning new mandates and maintaining institutional clients. To this date\, more than 1\,200 firms have registered with the CFA Institute as claiming compliance with the GIPS Standards. This event will provide a forum in New York to discuss the most recent developments in the GIPS standards and share views on the challenges and opportunities of their implementation.
