SUMMARY:CFA Society New York Book Club:The Fund: Ray Dalio\, Bridgewater Associates\, and the Unraveling of a Wall Street Legend by Rob Copeland
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThe CFA Society New York Book Club® meets every other month and is designed to be an informal group discussion on a multitude of investment related topics. The author is not present as this is simply a discussion on the book of the month to help members further digest the material and meet other like-minded CFA Society NY members. We will generally have 2-3 books planned in advance so members can pick and choose which ones they are interested in reading prior to the meeting. Overall\, a way to build on our investment knowledge and meet other members. \nTitle: The Fund: Ray Dalio\, Bridgewater Associates\, and the Unraveling of a Wall Street Legend\nAuthor: Rob Copeland \n\nThe unauthorized\, unvarnished story of famed Wall Street hedge-fund manager Ray Dalio. \nRay Dalio does not want you to read this book. \nLate last year\, when the billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates\, the largest hedge fund on the planet\, announced that he was stepping down from the company he started out of his apartment nearly 50 years ago\, the news made headlines around the world. Dalio cultivated an aura of international admiration and fame thanks to his company’s eye-popping success\, coupled with a mystique he encouraged with frequent media appearances\, celebrity hobnobbing\, and his bestselling book\, Principles. In The Fund\, award-winning New York Times journalist Rob Copeland punctures this carefully-constructed narrative of the benevolent business titan\, exposing his much-promoted “principles” as one of the great feats of hubris in modern memory―in practice\, they encouraged a toxic culture of paranoia and backstabbing. \nThe Fund is a page-turning\, stranger-than-fiction journey into a rarefied world of wealth and power. It offers an unflinching look at the pain so often caused by the “radical transparency” Dalio has described as a core tenet of his recipe for business success and a meaningful life. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with those inside and around the firm\, Copeland takes readers into the room as former FBI director Jim Comey kisses Dalio’s ring\, recent Pennsylvania Senate candidate David McCormick drinks the Kool-Aid\, and a rotating cast of memorable characters grapple with their personal psychological and moral limits―all under the watchful eye of their charismatic leader. \nThis is a cautionary tale for anyone convinced that the ability to make lots of money has anything at all to do with unlocking the principles of human nature.

SUMMARY:CFA Society New York Book Club:Same as Ever: A Guide to What Never Changes by Morgan Housel
\nTitle: Same as Ever: A Guide to What Never Changes\nAuthor: Morgan Housel \n\nFrom the author of the international blockbuster\, THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MONEY\, a powerful new tool to unlock one of life’s most challenging puzzles. \nEvery investment plan under the sun is\, at best\, an informed speculation of what may happen in the future\, based on a systematic extrapolation from the known past. \nSame as Ever reverses the process\, inviting us to identify the many things that never\, ever change. \nWith his usual elan\, Morgan Housel presents a master class on optimizing risk\, seizing opportunity\, and living your best life. Through a sequence of engaging stories and pithy examples\, he shows how we can use our newfound grasp of the unchanging to see around corners\, not by squinting harder through the uncertain landscape of the future\, but by looking backwards\, being more broad-sighted\, and focusing instead on what is permanently true.    \nBy doing so\, we may better anticipate the big stuff\, and achieve the greatest success\, not merely financial comforts\, but most importantly\, a life well lived.

SUMMARY:CFA Society New York Book Club:The Greatest Capitalist Who Ever Lived by Ralph Watson and Marc Wortman
\nTitle: The Greatest Capitalist Who Ever Lived\nAuthors: Ralph Watson and Marc Wortman \n\nA riveting\, first-ever\, sweeping biography of Thomas Watson\, Jr. – more important to the history and development of the modern world than Vanderbilt\, Morgan\, Rockefeller\, and Carnegie – who risked everything\, personally and professionally\, to reinvent IBM and launch the computer age that created the world we live in today. \nThomas Watson Jr. drove IBM to undertake the biggest gamble in business history with a revolution no other company of the age could dare– the creation in the 1960s of the IBM System/360\, the world’s first fully integrated and compatible mainframe computer that laid the foundation for the information technology future.  Its success made IBM the most valuable company in America. Fortune magazine touted him as “the greatest capitalist who ever lived.” Time named him one of the “One Hundred People of the Century.” \nBehind closed doors\, Watson was a multifaceted\, complicated man. As a young man\, he was a failed student and playboy\, an unlikely candidate for corporate titan. He pulled his life together as a courageous World War II pilot and took over IBM after his father’s death. He suffered from anxiety and depression so overwhelming that he spent days prostrate and locked in a bathroom at home while IBM faced crisis after crisis. And he carried out a family-shattering battle over the future of IBM with his brother Dick\, who expected to follow him as CEO. \nBut despite his many demons\, he laid the foundation for what eventually became the global information technology industry\, which dominates today’s world. His story\, and the industry he created\, is equal to\, if not more important than that of Rockefeller and Standard Oil\, Vanderbilt and the railroads\, and Morgan in finance.

SUMMARY:CFA Society New York Book Club:Slouching Towards Utopia: An Economic History of the Twentieth Century by J. Bradford De Long
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThe CFA Society New York Book Club® meets every other month and is designed to be an informal group discussion on a multitude of investment related topics. \nTitle: Slouching Towards Utopia: An Economic History of the Twentieth Century\nAuthor: J. Bradford De Long \n\nBefore 1870\, humanity lived in dire poverty\, with a slow crawl of invention offset by a growing population. Then came a great invention sprinted forward\, doubling our technological capabilities each generation and utterly transforming the economy again and again. Our ancestors would have presumed we would have used such powers to build utopia. But it was not so. When 1870–2010 ended\, the world instead saw global warming; economic depression\, uncertainty\, and inequality; and broad rejection of the status quo.  \nEconomist Brad DeLong’s Slouching Towards Utopia  tells the story of how this unprecedented explosion of material wealth occurred\, how it transformed the globe\, and why it failed to deliver us to utopia. Of remarkable breadth and ambition\, it reveals the last century to have been less a march of progress than a slouch in the right direction.
