SUMMARY:CFA Society New York Book Club:The Man Who Broke Capitalism: How Jack Welch Gutted the Heartland and Crushed the Soul of Corporate America―and How to Undo His Legacy by David Gelles
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThe CFA Society New York Book Club® meets every other month and is designed to be an informal group discussion on a multitude of investment related topics. The author is not present as this is simply a discussion on the book of the month to help members further digest the material and meet other like-minded CFA Society NY members. We will generally have 2-3 books planned in advance so members can pick and choose which ones they are interested in reading prior to the meeting. Overall\, a way to build on our investment knowledge and meet other members. \nTitle: The Man Who Broke Capitalism: How Jack Welch Gutted the Heartland and Crushed the Soul of Corporate America―and How to Undo His Legacy\nAuthor: David Gelles \n\nNew York Times reporter and “Corner Office” columnist David Gelles reveals legendary GE CEO Jack Welch to be the root of all that’s wrong with capitalism today and offers advice on how we might right those wrongs. \nIn 1981\, Jack Welch took over General Electric and quickly rose to fame as the first celebrity CEO. He golfed with presidents\, mingled with movie stars\, and was idolized for growing GE into the most valuable company in the world. But Welch’s achievements didn’t stem from some greater intelligence or business prowess. Rather\, they were the result of a sustained effort to push GE’s stock price ever higher\, often at the expense of workers\, consumers\, and innovation. In this captivating\, revelatory book\, David Gelles argues that Welch single-handedly ushered in a new\, cutthroat era of American capitalism that continues to this day. \nGelles chronicles Welch’s campaign to vaporize hundreds of thousands of jobs in a bid to boost profits\, eviscerating the country’s manufacturing base and destabilizing the middle class. Welch’s obsession with downsizing—he eliminated 10% of employees every year—fundamentally altered GE and inspired generations of imitators who have employed his strategies at other companies around the globe. In his day\, Welch was corporate America’s leading proponent of mergers and acquisitions\, using deals to gobble up competitors and giving rise to an economy that is more concentrated and less dynamic. And Welch pioneered the dark arts of “financialization\,” transforming GE from an admired industrial manufacturer into what was effectively an unregulated bank. The finance business was hugely profitable in the short term and helped Welch keep GE’s stock price ticking up. But ultimately\, financialization undermined GE and dozens of other Fortune 500 companies. \nGelles shows how Welch’s celebrated emphasis on increasing shareholder value by any means necessary (layoffs\, outsourcing\, offshoring\, acquisitions\, and buybacks\, to name but a few tactics) became the norm in American business generally. He demonstrates how that approach has led to the greatest socioeconomic inequality since the Great Depression and harmed many of the very companies that have embraced it. And he shows how a generation of Welch acolytes radically transformed companies like Boeing\, Home Depot\, Kraft Heinz\, and more. Finally\, Gelles chronicles the change that is now afoot in corporate America\, highlighting companies and leaders who have abandoned Welchism and are proving that it is still possible to excel in the business world without destroying livelihoods\, gutting communities\, and spurning regulation.

SUMMARY:Are Prospects for Private Equity and Venture Capital Markets Improving?
DESCRIPTION:OverviewSophisticated Institutional Investors have looked to achieve returns from private equity investing that are 5% per annum or more above public equity market returns\, and even higher for venture capital returns\, while allocating 20% to 40% of capital into private strategies.  The success of these investments is crucial to the success of these investors in meeting pension obligations and the missions of many nonprofit organizations.   \nHowever\, private equity and venture capital returns have disappointed over the last few years\, while having a greatly diminished pace of cash distributions.  Some institutional investors have reduced their commitments to new funds\, and many fundraising rounds have been smaller and longer to complete. Conversely\, niche areas like AI – related venture capital have been hotly subscribed\, while some lower middle market buyout managers have thrived.  \nHas the outlook for investing in private equity and venture capital fundamentally changed?    \nAgenda5:30 PM | REGISTRATION \n\n6:00 PM | WELCOMING REMARKS \n\n6:05 PM | PANEL DISCUSSION \nModerator \nJodie Gunzberg\, CFA\, Managing Partner\, InFi Strategies \nPanelists \nCarolyn Patton\, CFA\, Head of Private Market Client Solutions\, TIFF Investment Management \nBen Challgren\, Principal\, Top Tier Capital \nLara Druyan\, General Partner\, Private Liquidity Partners \n\n7:05 PM | Q&A \n\n7:25 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \n\n7:30 PM | NETWORKING RECEPTION

SUMMARY:CFA Society New York Lunch & Learn Series
DESCRIPTION:OverviewSuccinctly articulating an investment thesis is a critical skill for portfolio managers\, analysts\, product specialists\, and other CFA charterholders. But for many investment professionals\, turning their ideas into white papers\, blogs\, client letters\, or even emails can be an inefficient\, time-consuming\, or frustrating exercise.   \nIn this interactive session\, veteran financial writer Scott Wentworth will explain how investment professionals can improve their writing skills by doing something that already comes naturally to them: following a process. Scott will explain the steps of the process that he and other professional writers use and discuss how “non-writers” can apply these principles to whatever forms of writing they encounter in their jobs.   \nThis event will be open to non-members and students! Members are encouraged to bring a guest from outside the society. This event will be open to non-members and students!
