Despite robust growth in the PE industry\, smaller and younger GPs find it especially difficult to raise a fund. They tend to encounter stiff headwinds from LPs\, consultants\, and professional placement agents. Smaller and younger GPs may have problems with their team\, strategy\, or track record that knock them out of the running. Making matters more problematic\, LPs today often manage fully mature portfolios making it especially difficult to secure allocations into a new relationship. The obstacles can seem insurmountable. \nTake part in an insider’s case-study discussion with allocators and gatekeepers to learn how private equity managers are evaluated. Using hypothetical\, but realistic\, case studies (handed out prior to the event) our moderator will pose questions to solicit candid feedback from the panel. On the table will be real-world issues involving\, teams\, strategies\, and track records. The event is intended to be interactive with the audience\, so come prepared to ask your own questions. Get the kind of honest and specific feedback you rarely hear directly from investors. \nSpeakers\nIntroduction \nSteven Bloom\, CFA\, Senior Portfolio Manager\, ARC Fiduciary \nPanelists \nMarcia Haydel\, Managing Director\, Performance Equity Management\nMichael Kelly\, Managing Director\, Hamilton Lane\nDavid Chiang\, Global Head of PE Fund Investments at a prominent Family Office\nGijs van Thiel\, Managing Partner\, 747 Capital \nModerator \nTimothy Cunningham\, President\, Touchstone Group\, LLC \nOrganizers\nSteven G. Learn from investors what the major stumbling blocks are and how to overcome them. The panelists will share their views on how emerging managers can separate themselves from the competition. \nMajor Points\nFind out how managers can respond to concerns about track record blemishes\, employee turnover\, or any other issues that can create marketing issues. \nLearning Objectives\n\nConsider ways to overcome investor and allocator concerns about committing to emerging managers.\nBetter understand how the allocators think about a range of issues which can cast doubt about an emerging manager’s prospects for success.\n\nWho Should Attend?\nPrivate Equity Founder\, Portfolio Manager\, Analyst\, Allocator\, Investor\, Family Office\, Placement Agent\, Business Development Professional \nSilver Sponsor CFANY expects all attendees to comply with CFANY’s Code of Conduct while attending CFANY events or meetings. CFANY expressly reserves the right\, in its sole discretion\, to grant or deny access to any individual\, or to expel any individual from any CFANY event or meeting. \nDisclaimer The CFA Society New York\, Inc. SUMMARY:Valuations in a Risk-Free World
DESCRIPTION:Valuations in a Risk-Free WorldRegister for EventOverviewDetailsAgendaOverview\n \nThis event has been designed to alert and educate attendees about the possibility of valuation bubbles across equities\, fixed income\, real estate and other asset classes such as cryptocurrencies as it pertains to low interest rates and extensive money printing by the leading global central banks since 2009. As the Federal Reserve is in the process of reversing this steady state of benign financing terms for most market participants the speakers will lay out their views on how valuations may react when the proverbial tide goes out. We have drawn senior speakers from prestigious firms with a strong back-ground in analyzing market distortions and successfully allocation capital and making prudent investing decisions in the past. The speakers come from both the buy side (GMO\, Sprott Asset Mgmt USA\, Alliance Bernstein) as well as the sell side (Credit Suisse\, Pelham Smithers). \nLearning Outcome Statement\nLearn how to analyze valuation distortions both on an asset class level and stock level. \n\nLearn how in the past similar market environments unfolded and resolved\nLearn how the glass can be half full for some and half empty for others in looking at current market valuations\n\nDetails\n \nDate\nMonday\, September 25\, 2017\n8:00 am – 1:05 pm \n\nLocation\nCFA Society New York\n1540 Broadway Suite 1010\nNew York\, NY \n\nFees\nMembers $25 \nNonmembers $65 \nAgenda\n8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. REGISTRATION & CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST \n\n8:30 a.m. – 8:35 a.m. WELCOME COMMENTS \nMichael Oliver Weinberg\, CFA\, Chief Investment Officer at Protégé Partners \n\n8:40 a.m. – 9:20 a.m. PRESENTATION \nCatherine LeGraw\, CFA\, Portfolio Strategist at GMO \n\n9:30 a.m. – 10:20 a.m. FIRESIDE CHAT \nPelham Smithers\, Managing Director at Pelham Smithers Associates \nWhitney George\, Portfolio Manager at Sprott Asset Management USA \nModerated by Michael Oliver Weinberg\, CFA\, Chief Investment Officer at Protégé Partners \n\n10:20 a.m. – 10:40 a.m. NETWORKING BREAK \n\n10:40 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. PRESENTATION \nJill Carey Hall\, CFA\, Vice President and US Equity Strategist\, BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research \n\n11:20 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. NETWORKING BREAK \n\n11:30 a.m. – 12:10 p.m. PRESENTATION \nVADIM ZLOTNIKOV\, Chief Market Strategist\, AllianceBernstein \n\n12:15 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. LUNCHEON PRESENTATION \nJAMES KELLY\, Director of Gabelli Center for Global Security at Fordham University \n\n1:00 p.m. – 1:05 p.m. CLOSING COMMENTS \nElliot Trexler\, President & Chief Investment Officer at Global Return Asset Management\, LLC \nOrganizers\nMICHAEL OLIVER WEINBERG\, CFA \nMATHIAS STROHFELDT\, CFA \nELLIOT TREXLER \n×Michael Oliver Weinberg\, CFA\nChief Investment Officer of MOV37 and Protégé Partners  \nFor more than two decades Michael has invested directly at the security level and indirectly as an asset allocator in traditional and alternative asset classes. \nHe is the Chief Investment Officer at MOV37 and Protégé Partners\, where he is a Senior Managing Director\, and on the investment\, management and risk committees. SUMMARY:Single Stock Concentration Risk Management Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Single-Stock Concentration Risk Management SeminarWednesday\, September 27\, 2017 \nMembers: $10 | Nonmembers: $25 \nREGISTER TO ATTENDLiveStream Access: FREE | Available to Members Only\n8:00 am-10:00 am \nRegister for LiveStreamOverviewDetailsAgendaSpeakersOverview\nWhether the result of equity-based compensation from employment at public companies\, or the rewards of a liquidity event borne of entrepreneurial success\, concentrated single-stock positions are relatively common among wealthy individuals. Clients often wish to maintain ownership of some or all of their highly appreciated stock for a variety of reasons\, such as tax and estate planning considerations\, emotional attachment to the stock and restrictions on the shares. With the stock market at record heights\, interest rates ratcheting up\, risks seemingly everywhere and the possibility of tax reform still in the air\, single-stock risk management has taken on a renewed focus. Ideally\, such investors would like to: \n• Preserve their unrealized gains at an affordable cost\n• Avoid triggering a taxable event and other adverse tax outcomes; and\n• Retain all future price appreciation and dividends \nIn this workshop\, moderator Thomas Boczar\, and presenters Mark Leeds\, Brian Yolles\, and Elizabeth Ostrander will review a variety of tools and techniques–some old\, some new\, some obvious\, and some not so obvious–that financial advisors and their clients might avail themselves to achieve these objectives\, including a new risk management methodology\, referred to as a Stock Protection Fund\, for investors seeking to reduce their downside risk over a long-term period\, without capping their upside or triggering a reportable event. \nSpeakers and Bios\nModerator \nTom Boczar\, CFA\, is CEO of Intelligent Edge Advisors. If you don’t have a great investment idea\, there is nothing to pitch. If you have a great idea but cannot communicate it\, your pitch will fall on deaf ears. Although these skills are so essential\, they are rarely taught on Wall Street. As a result\, analysts are forced to develop this expertise on their own through an agonizing process of trial and error. Pitch the Perfect Investment provides the tools to significantly accelerate this learning process. Attracted by consistent yields\, long-term appreciation\, inflation-hedging characteristics\, and low correlation to other asset classes\, institutional investors represent a growing portion of fragmented farmland ownership universe. The trend is likely to continue until agriculture becomes a staple of every portfolio. The long-term drivers are evident: the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates the global population will reach 9.7 Billion by 2050\, requiring overall food production to increase by 70% during this period. In addition\, rising incomes in emerging and developing economies provides another boost in food production demand. Concerns about water scarcity and security continue to focus attention on agricultural land use worldwide. Advanced scrutiny of water consumption encourages regions\, states\, and countries lacking ample water to conserve the resource by importing rather than producing grain\, fruit\, cotton\, and meat\, each of which requires a substantial amount of water use. Responding to the virtual water trade will cause regions that experience drought and desert conditions to reduce production of water-thirsty agricultural products. The event will kick-off with a review of U.S. land investment performance. The panel will discuss strategies\, challenges and their outlook for the future of this $5 trillion-dollar industry. For example: how should one view the most basic of needs from an investment perspective; how can investors participate in the long-term trend; has the asset been repriced before investors have even had a chance to investigate the opportunity? Likewise\, how does weather\, advanced production techniques\, and the shift from lower-value to higher-value commodities affect industry dynamics? \nFeatures\, Benefits\, Values\nLearn whether it makes sense to include agricultural investments in your portfolio and how to go about gaining exposure. \nMajor Points\n\nHow does agriculture perform as an investment?\nAre the long-term drivers sustainable? Have they been priced in?\nHow does one gain exposure to a mostly illiquid asset class?\nHow does the outlook for land holdings\, leased operations\, crops\, storage\, and delivery vary?\n\nWho Should Attend?\nCIO\, portfolio manager\, analyst\, economist\, strategist\, private wealth adviser\, family office manager\, private equity professional \n CFANY expects all attendees to comply with CFANY’s Code of Conduct while attending CFANY events or meetings. CFANY expressly reserves the right\, in its sole discretion\, to grant or deny access to any individual\, or to expel any individual from any CFANY event or meeting. \nDisclaimer The CFA Society New York\, Inc. Inc. \nOverview\n  \nTransitioning military veterans enter the workforce with diverse experiences and tremendous leadership capacity. Yet\, reaching the potential benefit for both the firm and the veteran requires a considerably deeper understanding of what is necessary for success than either appreciates. This challenge is significant. In 2014\, a survey conducted by Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families found that nearly half of veterans leave their first post-military position within a year. Both veterans and employers have to do more to improve success rates for both parties. This event explores these issues in detail. It offers actionable advice to active duty\, currently transitioning\, and seasoned prior-military and non prior-military professionals wanting to tap the potential of the military’s can-do\, high integrity ethos in their organizations. \nBenefits\nThe event brings together experienced Wall Street professionals and transitioning military persons for an exploration of how to keep prior military talent engaged\, while providing organizations with the insights to reap the benefits. \nKey Points\nSuccess\, impact\, wealth – goals that every ambitious veteran craves. And like many young and motivated professionals out of college who are seeking Wall Street careers\, they want results and they want these results fast. A lucky few achieve such\, but for many\, careers are long\, winding roads with ups and downs. For veterans\, understanding and managing one’s emotional self has parallels with going into a battle. Just as every veteran recognizes that ‘hope is not a strategy’\, attendees should come away with a better appreciation that the ups and downs of joining the civilian workforce requires a well thought out strategy. \nWhat You Will Learn\nAttendees will gain better tools for assessing their ambitions\, their passions\, their strengths and weaknesses\, and perhaps most importantly\, their personal peeves that will almost certainly be triggered along their paths. \nAttendees will delve into corporate cultures and gain a deeper appreciation of management styles\, differing vantage points\, and areas where conflict and dissatisfaction may arise. \nAttendees will gain greater appreciation of how to increase probabilities of success and the importance of quality mentors. \nAttendees will gain a better appreciation for the camaraderie and structure that they will quickly realize will be lacking from many civilian work cultures\, and how to thrive in such an environment. \nWho Should Attend\nAll non-military and prior service member professionals are welcome and encouraged to attend. \n CFANY expects all attendees to comply with CFANY’s Code of Conduct while attending CFANY events or meetings. CFANY expressly reserves the right\, in its sole discretion\, to grant or deny access to any individual\, or to expel any individual from any CFANY event or meeting. \nDisclaimer The CFA Society New York\, Inc. SUMMARY:A.I. and the Data Revolution Series Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThis conference brings together innovators\, experts\, and practitioners utilizing artificial intelligence\, alternative data\, data science\, and technology to kickoff a series of events focused on the impact of these advances on the world of finance. Artificial Intelligence and methods of analysis such as machine learning\, the availability of new data sets\, sophisticated computing\, and computerized trading have the potential to revolutionize the financial services industry. Investment managers who adopt these new technologies are likely to have an edge. \nNonetheless\, with innovation there can be potential setbacks; some data will have no value and complex computing techniques won’t always produce better results. Finding the right balance between human and machine is critical. Though explainable AI in on the horizon\, allocators and asset owners may find themselves assessing a blackbox. This event examines the effects of AI-driven methods of analysis\, new data sets and increased computing power on finance. \nAgenda6:05 PM | OPENING REMARKS \n\n6:10 PM | KEYNOTE \n\nJack Kokko\, CEO and Founder of AlphaSense \n\n\n7:00 PM | PANEL \n\nModerator \nMatei Zatreanu\, Founder\, System2 \n\nPanelists \nUlrike Zeilberger\, Executive Consultant\, Watson Center of Competence\, IBM \nAlexey Loganchuk\, Founder\, Upgrade Capital \nEdward Oliver\, Director\, Dataminr \nMutisya Ndunda\, CEO and Founder\, Alpha Vertex \n\n\n7:50 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \n\nJonathan Prin\, CFA\, Managing Director and Head of Research\, Greylock Capital \n\n\nREFRESHMENTS & NETWORKING \nAdditional DetailsLearning Objectives \n\nGain an understanding of current developments AI and other methods of analysis\, new data sets and advanced computing\nUnderstand areas of financial services where these innovations and developments are having an impact now and in the future.\nDiscuss best practices in adopting and incorporating data driven developments into their respective practice.\n\n1.5 CE Credits \n\nSponsored by Kaplan Schweser
