SUMMARY:Veterans Roundtable Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Group DescriptionThe Veterans Committee of CFA Society New York\, (a.k.a. Veterans Roundtable) is a special interest group dedicated to supporting prior military service members through professional networking and finance education. Our mission is to establish the foundations from which military veteran members may better achieve leading positions in the financial world. We promote CFA Society New York and CFA Institute programs\, while also being highly active in NYC regional and national-level veteran clubs and affairs. By being active supporters and participants in other veteran organizations\, we are able leverage their networks\, and broaden the reach of CFA Society New York and CFA Institute. Why have such a group? The ethical standards promoted throughout military services worldwide align with Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice of the CFA Institute. Part of what attracts future generations of leaders to the military services is robust support groups that empower access the fullest range of post-military career options\, including the highest levels of finance. Our membership is open to CFA Society New York members\, CFA Charterholders\, CFA program participants\, active duty military service members\, and interested persons dedicated to CFA Institute mission and values. We aim to meet at least six times a year for meetings/socials\, hold a minimum of two CFA Society New York programming events per year\, and actively participate in other veteran organizations at least six times per year. This event will explore the issues of compensation and talent management from the firm perspective. Companies need to understand how to recruit and retain the best talent\, especially in an increasingly tight job market with outside industries such as Tech competing for people once destined for Finance. Owners also need to understand how important company culture\, diversity\, and inclusion is to the mandate of institutional investors. \nJoin Group

SUMMARY:Data Visualization and Business Analytics with Microsoft Power BI
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA two-day virtual course\, presented by Cognitir \nStrong data culture is a sine qua non for organizations in the digital age\, and proprietary data insights are becoming the most important asset for all organizations. Firms that are invested in crafting a compelling\, authentic narrative from their data are uniquely positioned to establish enduring brands and thrive in all market environments. When it comes to communicating such insights for business objectives\, a striking data visualization cannot be beat. \nDuring a single day\, participants will explore an extensible data visualization framework (Microsoft Power BI) that allows finance and business professionals to create reports and dashboards that leverage their existing data products. Participants will learn how to gather relevant data from sample spreadsheets\, overcome data preparation obstacles\, and build an interactive dashboard that they can publish to the web. \nThis course uses Power BI because Power BI is the uncontested leader in the sector as illuminated by Gartner’s Analytics and Business Intelligence Platform Magic Quadrant. \nAt the conclusion of the workshop\, participants will have developed their own web dashboard that they can readily adapt to their own professional contexts\, and which they can then use to obtain better insights into their own work and/or share it with their co-workers. \nPrerequisites \nThere are no prerequisites for this course\, however\, Mac users will need to install and use Windows on their Mac (through a virtual environment\, etc) as Power BI is only compatible with Windows. \n$499 Members | $599 Nonmembers \nCourse Curriculum×Course Curriculum\n\n\n\n\nIntroduction to Power BI and Initial Setup\nConnecting Data and Transforming Data in Power BI\n \n\nHow does Power BI connect to our data? \nHow might we clean and transform our data to prepare it for a dashboard? \nWhat is Power Query and how does it work? \nUpdating and modifying data loads \nCustomizing a table we’ve loaded \nCustomizing and adding columns to a table \n\nTable Relationships and Data Models \n\n Introduction to the Relationships pane in Power BI \nHow does one establish relationships? \nCardinality of relationships \nFact and Dimension tables \nBasic schema types (data models) and normalization \n\nData Analysis with DAX and M \n\nM and Power Query \nDAX and the Data pane \nWhen to use M and when to use DAX \nCommon M transformations \nCommon DAX transformations \nMeasures\, filters\, and contexts \n\nData Visualization \n\nIntro to the Report pane \nTiles\, tabs\, and filters \nCommon visualizations and their use cases \nFormatting a visual \nSlicers and Interactions \nStyling and Accessibility \n\nSummative Project\, Exit Review\, and Next Steps \n\n\n\n\nCloseCourse Developers×Course Developers\nJonathan Karp \n\n\n\n\nJon is a former science teacher and current business analyst at Teach For America\, leading projects focused on data and foundational technologies in the education sector. SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: Joseph Calandro Jr. on Jay Gould and the Union Pacific from the Panic of 1873-1880
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance \nJoin us for the latest event in the Centennial Speaker Series\, featuring Joseph Calandro Jr. \nNo one in the United States’ financial or business history is as misunderstood and under-appreciated as Jay Gould. This presentation will assess Gould’s skills as a corporate executive following his distressed investment in\, and subsequent control of\, the Union Pacific Railroad (UP). The UP was in distress due to volatility emanating from the infamous financial panic of 1873. Gould executed his turnaround in an economy devoid of monetary stimulus\, without a government bailout\, and under pressure from the government to pay back the firm’s public loans. Gould employed many modern techniques in his turnaround that are relevant to 21st-century executives. His example also serves as an important historical reminder that successful executives do not require government bailouts. \nAgenda12:00 PM | WELCOMING REMARKS \n\nDonna Rapaccioli\, Dean of the Gabelli School of Business\, Fordham University \n\n\n12:05 PM | SPEAKER INTRODUCTION \n\nDavid Cowen\, President\, Chief Executive Officer\, Museum of American Finance \n\n\n12:08 PM | DISCUSSION \n\nJoseph Calandro Jr.\, Author of Applied Value Investing\, Creating Strategic Value; Editor\, Strategy & Leadership \n\n\n12:45 PM | AUDIENCE Q&A \n\n1:00 PM |  CLOSING REMARKS \n\nDavid Cowen\, President\, Chief Executive Officer\, Museum of American Finance \n\nCo-Sponsored By

SUMMARY:Quantitative Investing Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:OverviewWe present a novel Monte Carlo based LSV calibration algorithm that applies to all stochastic volatility models\, including the non-Markovian rough volatility family. Our framework overcomes the limitations of the particle method proposed by Guyon and Henry-Labordère (2012) and theoretically guarantees a variance reduction without additional computational complexity. Specifically\, we obtain a closed-form and exact calibration method that allows us to remove the dependency on both the kernel function and bandwidth parameter. This makes the algorithm more robust and less prone to errors or instabilities in a production environment. We test the efficiency of our algorithm on various hybrid (rough) local stochastic volatility models. \nQuantitative Investing Group×Quantitative Investing Group \nThe Quantitative Investing Group brings together professionals seeking to incorporate cutting edge quantitative investment techniques and alternative data sets in their investing and risk processes. Members include (but are not limited to) discretionary and systematic portfolio managers\, risk managers\, traders and fundamental analysts\, data strategists\, quantitative researchers\, and others.
