SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: Kevin R. Mirabile on Exotic Alternative Investments
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance \nJoin us for a discussion with Kevin R. Mirabile\, author of Exotic Alternative Investments: Standalone Characteristics\, Unique Risks and Portfolio Effects (Anthem Press\, 2021). In the book\, Mirabile evaluates exotic alternative investment opportunities\, such as life settlements\, litigation funding\, farmlands\, royalties\, weather derivatives\, collectibles\, and other unique asset classes\, providing an in-depth analysis of the returns\, risks\, opportunities\, and portfolio effects for anyone who wants to expand their investment horizons. \nThis book—written for individual investors\, financial advisors\, and academics who desire knowledge about investment products beyond just stocks and bonds or vanilla hedge funds\, private equity\, and real estate investments—provides a critical link to industry data and original research that supports the case for adding exotic alternative investments to traditional portfolios. \nAn excellent tool for practitioners wishing to understand the rationale and impact of allocating capital to these exotic and less-understood investment opportunities\, the book includes an analysis of returns and risk from a wide range of direct investments in individual exotic asset classes\, as well as from investing in public shares and exchange-traded funds. It also includes a section on how these exotic investments performed relative to both traditional and alternative investments\, such as hedge funds\, both before and after the spring 2020 market crash. \nAgenda12:00 PM | WELCOMING REMARKS \n\nDonna Rapaccioli\, Dean of the Gabelli School of Business\, Fordham University \n\n\n12:08 PM | FIRESIDE CHAT \n\nModerated by Dean Rapaccioli and Professor Sris Chatterjee \nKevin R. SUMMARY:Alternatives Market Outlook
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThe alternative assets industry has continued to grow and is now a mainstay of the modern investment landscape. Example strategies include private equity\, hedge funds\, real estate\, infrastructure\, private debt\, venture capital and more esoteric aspects such as cryptocurrency. Market volatility\, record low rates and a search for potentially attractive risk adjusted return profiles continues to drive the alternatives landscape. In addition\, once seen as only available to premier investors such as pensions\, foundations & endowments and other institutions\, recent regulatory change has sought to expand the reach of alternative assets into the more retail community. \nAs such\, the alternatives industry is expected to continue its rapid expansion and improvement driven by technology\, increasing global competition\, a focus on diversity and inclusion as well as other factors. \nLeading experts in this field will discuss the history\, growth trajectory and opportunities in the alternatives space. \nAgenda1:00 PM | WELCOMING REMARKS \n\nStephan Connelly\, CFA\, Director\, Star Mountain Capital\, Co-Chair of the Alternatives Investment Group\, CFA Society NY \n\n\n1:05 PM | PANEL DISCUSSION \n\nModerator \nJohn Bowman\, CFA\, Senior Managing Director\, CAIA Association \nPanelist \nAmy McGarrity\, CFA\, Chief Investment Officer\, Colorado PERA \nStephen Moseley\, Deputy CIO\, Head of Private Markets and Alternative Investments\, Alaska Permanent Fund \nSean Ward\, Managing Director\, Dyal Capital Partners \n\n\n1:45 PM |  Q&A \n\n2:00 PM | CLOSING REMARKS & ADJOURNMENT \n\nAnna Sembos\, PhD\, CFA\, Managing Director\, CIFC Asset Management\, Co-Chair of the Alternatives Investment Group\, CFA Society NY \n\nAdditional DetailsLearning Outcomes \n\nLearn about the history and different components of alternative investments\nDiscuss the changing landscape of this asset class driven by recent economic activity and other large scale drivers such as technology and global competition. \nDiscuss the outlook for the industry and where opportunities may be available

SUMMARY:Quantitative Investing Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:OverviewIn collaboration with the Sustainable Investing Group. \nTopic: Towards Green Alpha: Analyzing ESG Exposures Through a Factor Lens \nUsing data on 1\,312 US equity active mutual funds with $3.9 trillion in AUM\, we analyze the link between funds’ “bottoms up” holdings-based environmental\, social\, and governance (“ESG”) scores and funds’ active returns\, style factor loadings\, and alphas. We find that funds with high ESG scores do have different profiles of factor loadings than low-scoring ESG funds. In particular\, funds with high Environmental scores tend to have high quality and momentum factor loadings. In partitioning the ESG scores into components that are related to factors (Factor ESG) and idiosyncratic components (Idiosyncratic ESG)\, we find strong positive relations between fund alphas and Factor ESG scores. \nQuantitative Investing Group×Quantitative Investment Group\nThe Quantitative Investing Group brings together professionals seeking to incorporate cutting edge quantitative investment techniques and alternative data sets in their investing and risk processes. Members include (but are not limited to) discretionary and systematic portfolio managers\, risk managers\, traders and fundamental analysts\, data strategists\, quantitative researchers\, and others. The topic covered range from quantitative alpha generation\, big data as well as alternative datasets\, quantamental signals i.e. the intersection of fundamental analysis and quantitative decision making\, mathematical and statistical aspects of modern quantitative analysis\, use of programming languages or quant tools\, Natural Language Processing\, machine learning for investing and risk management\, theory and implementation of AI in finance and more. \nJoin Group  \nCloseSustainable Investing Group×Sustainable Investing Group\nThe Sustainable Investing Thought Leadership Group provides a forum to advance the dialogue regarding the role of sustainable investing in today’s capital markets and beyond.\n\n\nIn particular\, the Group directs its attention to furthering an understanding and clarifying the risks and opportunities linked to environmental\, social and governance (ESG) issues\, and how to quantify these considerations over the short and long-term in a way that permits such factors to be integrated into investment strategies and decision making across a variety of asset classes\, including both liquid and illiquid segments of the market. \nFurther\, the group will focus on understanding trends and developments in this sphere and engaging as well as partnering with industry practitioners\, thought leaders and other relevant organizations\, including\, for example\, the CFA Society\, governmental agencies and academic institutions. This will be achieved by organizing regular events\, panel discussions and symposiums intended to promote a dialogue\, educate mainstream investors and improve the understanding of how and in what way ESG considerations affect investment decision making and outcomes. \n\n \nCloseGuest SpeakerAndrew Ang\, PhD\, Managing Director\, Head of Factor Based Strategies at BlackRock  \n Andrew Ang\, PhD\, Managing Director\, coordinates BlackRock’s efforts in factor investing. He leads BlackRock’s Factor-Based Strategies Group which manages macro and style factor multi-asset funds. The group optimizes factors to help meet investment outcomes\, such as retirement savings\, factor advisory mandates and bespoke factor solutions\, and develops factor analytics tools leveraging BlackRock’s Aladdin platform.\n \nThroughout his career\, Dr. Ang has focused on identifying and harvesting factor risk premiums within and across asset classes. Before joining BlackRock in 2015\, Dr. Ang was Chair of the Finance and Economics Division and the Ann F. Kaplan Professor of Business at Columbia Business School. He has published widely on equities\, fixed income\, asset and factor allocation\, and alternative assets. His book\, “Asset Management: A Systematic Approach to Factor Investing” is a comprehensive guide showing how factor risk premiums can be harvested in portfolio design and incorporated in all aspects of investment management. As a professor\, Dr. Ang worked with several large institutional managers as an advisor and consultant.\n \nDr. Ang earned a BEc(Hons) degree in actuarial studies from Macquarie University\, and a PhD in finance and MS in statistics from Stanford University.

SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series - George G. Szpiro on Risky Decisions: How Mathematical Paradoxes and Other Conundrums Have Shaped Economic Science
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThis event is co-sponsored with the CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nAt its core\, economics is about making decisions. In the history of economic thought\, great intellectual prowess has been exerted toward devising exquisite theories of optimal decision-making in situations of constraint\, risk\, and scarcity. Yet not all of our choices are purely logical\, so there is a long-standing tension between those emphasizing the rational and irrational sides of human behavior. One strand develops formal models of rational utility-maximizing\, while the other draws on what behavioral science has shown about our tendency to act irrationally. \nIn this talk\, George Szpiro will give examples of mathematical paradoxes and psychological conundrums that have led to advancements in economic science. He will challenge the audience with questions about how to make decisions\, thereby showing how people who believe themselves to be rational can be led astray. \nAgenda12:00 PM | WELCOME REMARKS \n\nDonna Rapaccioli\, Dean\, Gabelli School of Business\, Fordham University \n\n\n12:05 PM | SPEAKER INTRODUCTION \n\nDavid Cowen\, President\, Chief Executive Officer\, Museum of American Finance \n\n\n12:08 PM | DISCUSSION \n\nGeorge G.
