SUMMARY:LIBOR Transition Series
DESCRIPTION:OverviewLIBOR has played a pivotal benchmarking role in global financial markets for 35 years\, but as this role winds down and firms transition to using SOFR and other reference rates\, millions of contracts worth hundreds of trillions of dollars must be retooled. \nBy June 2023\, this once-dominant reference rate will be phased out entirely. Capital markets\, consumer loans\, and a wide variety of investment products will be affected by this transition. In the U.S.\, the shift is well underway\, with regulator plans to accelerate the process through 2021 as recommended by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) in its 2020 Progress Report. \nJoin CFA Society New York as we invite leaders from across the industry to share their expertise during this transition period. In three sessions\, speakers will address implications for capital markets and asset management\, share their observations on the current process\, and envision actionable strategies for firms to navigate complex legal\, methodological\, and regulatory considerations. \nDon’t miss out on these timely sessions addressing an industry paradigm shift. SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: Hidden in Plain Sight: How to Save Active Investment Management\, Part I: The Situation
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nDiversification is a core principle of investing. Yet money managers have not applied it to their own ranks. Only around 10 percent of portfolio managers—the people most directly responsible for investing your money—are female\, and the numbers are even worse at the ownership level. What are the causes of this underrepresentation\, and what are its consequences—including for firms’ and clients’ bottom lines? \nIn Undiversified: The Big Gender Short in Investment Management\, experienced practitioners Ellen Carr and Katrina Dudley examine the lack of women in investment management and propose solutions to improve the imbalance. They explore the barriers that subtly but effectively discourage women from entering and staying in the industry at each point in the pipeline. At the entry-level\, the lack of visible role models discourages students from considering the field\, and those who do embark on an investment management career face many obstacles to retention and promotion. Carr and Dudley highlight the importance of informal knowledge about how to navigate career tracks\, without which women are left at a disadvantage in an industry that lionizes confidence. They showcase a diverse constellation of successful female portfolio managers to demystify the profession. \nDrawing on wide-ranging research; interviews with prospective\, current\, and former industry practitioners; and the authors’ own experiences\, Undiversified makes a compelling case that increasing the number of women could help transform active investment management at a time when it is under threat from passive strategies and technological innovation. \nAgenda5:30 PM | WELCOME REMARKS \n\nDonna Rapaccioli\, Dean\, Gabelli School of Business\, Fordham University \n\n\n5:35 PM | FIRESIDE CHAT \n\nModerator \nLaura Rittenhouse\, Author\, Investing Between the Line \nPanelists \nEllen Carr\, Author\, Undiversified: The Big Gender Short in Investment Managemen \nKatrina Dudley\, Author\, Undiversified: The Big Gender Short in Investment Managemen \nDan Hanson\, Chief Investment Officer\, Waddell & Reed Financial Inc.\, Ivy Investment Management Company \n\n\n6:15 PM | AUDIENCE Q&A \n\n6:30 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \n\nDonna Rapaccioli\, Dean\, Gabelli School of Business\, Fordham University \n\nCo- Sponsored By

SUMMARY:Data Visualization and Business Analytics with Microsoft Power BI
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA two-day virtual course\, presented by Cognitir \nStrong data culture is a sine qua non for organizations in the digital age\, and proprietary data insights are becoming the most important asset for all organizations. Firms that are invested in crafting a compelling\, authentic narrative from their data are uniquely positioned to establish enduring brands and thrive in all market environments. When it comes to communicating such insights for business objectives\, a striking data visualization cannot be beat. \nDuring a single day\, participants will explore an extensible data visualization framework (Microsoft Power BI) that allows finance and business professionals to create reports and dashboards that leverage their existing data products. Participants will learn how to gather relevant data from sample spreadsheets\, overcome data preparation obstacles\, and build an interactive dashboard that they can publish to the web. \nThis course uses Power BI because Power BI is the uncontested leader in the sector as illuminated by Gartner’s Analytics and Business Intelligence Platform Magic Quadrant. \nAt the conclusion of the workshop\, participants will have developed their own web dashboard that they can readily adapt to their own professional contexts\, and which they can then use to obtain better insights into their own work and/or share it with their co-workers. \nPrerequisites \nThere are no prerequisites for this course\, however\, Mac users will need to install and use Windows on their Mac (through a virtual environment\, etc) as Power BI is only compatible with Windows. \nRegular Rate \n$519 Members | $623 Nonmembers \nCourse Curriculum×Course Curriculum\nIntroduction to Power BI and Initial Setup\nConnecting Data and Transforming Data in Power BI\n \n\nHow does Power BI connect to our data? \nHow might we clean and transform our data to prepare it for a dashboard? \nWhat is Power Query and how does it work? \nUpdating and modifying data loads \nCustomizing a table we’ve loaded \nCustomizing and adding columns to a table \n\nTable Relationships and Data Models \n\n Introduction to the Relationships pane in Power BI \nHow does one establish relationships? \nCardinality of relationships \nFact and Dimension tables \nBasic schema types (data models) and normalization \n\nData Analysis with DAX and M \n\nM and Power Query \nDAX and the Data pane \nWhen to use M and when to use DAX \nCommon M transformations \nCommon DAX transformations \nMeasures\, filters\, and contexts \n\nData Visualization \n\nIntro to the Report pane \nTiles\, tabs\, and filters \nCommon visualizations and their use cases \nFormatting a visual \nSlicers and Interactions \nStyling and Accessibility \n\nSummative Project\, Exit Review\, and Next Steps \nCloseCourse Developers×Course Developers\nJonathan Karp \n\n\n\n\nJon is a former science teacher and current business analyst at Teach For America\, leading projects focused on data and foundational technologies in the education sector. SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: John F. Wasik on Lincolnomics: How President Lincoln Constructed the Great American Economy
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance \nHas there ever been a time when Abraham Lincoln has gone silent? Our immortal conscience on civil rights and individual freedom is speaking to us yet again in the time of COVID-19 and public unrest. Yet Lincoln has managed to become even more relevant as we tackle infrastructure\, health care\, climate change\, and human rights. The forthcoming book by John F. Wasik\, Lincolnomics: How President Lincoln Constructed the Great American Economy\, puts the 16th president in a powerful new light: He was our foremost architect of economic development\, equal treatment\, and physical and intellectual improvements\, from transportation to medical research. \nIn this presentation\, Wasik will show a vastly under-studied side of Lincoln. As the only president to hold a patent\, he was an innovator. During his brief time as a surveyor\, he was an urban planner. Surprisingly\, his longest and most comprehensive speeches were devoted to the culture of invention\, “internal improvements\,” and research and development. \nLincoln as “Innovator in Chief” has enhanced relevance today\, as the new Congress and president lean into a bold program on national infrastructure\, climate change\, and health care reforms. Lincoln not only gave the nation a framework for a more just and equitable society\, he literally told us how we could go about building it. \nCopies of Lincolnomics will be raffled off to attendees. \nAgenda12:00 PM | WELCOME REMARKS \n\nJames Kelly\, Director\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, Fordham University \n\n\n12:05 PM | SPEAKER INTRODUCTION \n\nDavid Cowen\, President\, Chief Executive Officer\, Museum of American Finance \n\n\n12:08 PM | DISCUSSION \n\nJohn F. Members may join any number of groups; CFA Society New York membership is a requirement. \nLeadership Groups HomeRegistration Options Single Day Pass$FREEFree and Available to Members AND Nonmembers4-Day Bundle$FREEFree and Available to Members AND NonmembersAgendaSchedule — Interest Group Attendance\nTuesday\, April 20 \n\nCareer Development\nNew Jersey\nPerformance Risk & Analytics\nYoung Leaders\n\n\nThursday\, April 22 \n\nBusiness Management\nGlobal Investing\nInvestment Strategy Roundtable\nQuantitative Investing\nToastmasters\n\n\nTuesday\, April 27 \n\nFintech\nValue Investing\nInstitutional Asset Management\nFinancial Reporting & Analysis\n\n\nWednesday\, April 28 \n\nAlternative Investments\nSustainable Investing\nPrivate Wealth Management\nVeterans Roundtable\n\nAdditional DetailsLearning Outcomes \n\nNetwork with peers and discover shared interests\nUnderstand the structure and function of Leadership Groups at CFA Society New York\nExplore opportunities to join or create Leadership Groups\nDiscuss ways to maintain member camaraderie through events and initiatives
