SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: Paul Schmelzing to Discuss Lower Forever or Set for a Regime Break? Lessons from Real Interest Rates Since the 14th Century
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nPaul Schmelzing will discuss his groundbreaking research on real interest rate dynamics since the beginning of secondary debt markets\, the topic of one of his Ph.D. chapters. Visiting U.S. and European archives over multiple years\, he reconstructed global real interest rate series that cover 82% of advanced economy gross domestic product (GDP) spanning 700 years\, and he argues that our current negative rate environment has actually been in the making for centuries. Schmelzing will explain why investors during the Italian Renaissance could already have predicted that the global economy would hit the “zero lower bound” in our time\, why there is no such thing as a “normal” or “steady-state” interest rate\, and what chances are the major recent fiscal and monetary stimuli will trigger a structural break from the low inflation\, low rate era. \nFollowing the presentation\, James Grant and Richard Sylla will lead a discussion on the history of interest rates and will take questions from the audience. \nAgenda12:00 PM | OPENING REMARKS \n\n12:05 PM | KEYNOTE PRESENTATION \n\nPaul Schmelzing\, Ph. SUMMARY:Veterans Roundtable Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Group DescriptionThe Veterans Committee of CFA Society New York\, (a.k.a. Veterans Roundtable) is a special interest group dedicated to supporting prior military service members through professional networking and finance education. Our mission is to establish the foundations from which military veteran members may better achieve leading positions in the financial world. We promote CFA Society New York and CFA Institute programs\, while also being highly active in NYC regional and national-level veteran clubs and affairs. By being active supporters and participants in other veteran organizations\, we are able leverage their networks\, and broaden the reach of CFA Society New York and CFA Institute. Why have such a group? The ethical standards promoted throughout military services worldwide align with Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice of the CFA Institute. Part of what attracts future generations of leaders to the military services is robust support groups that empower access the fullest range of post-military career options\, including the highest levels of finance. Our membership is open to CFA Society New York members\, CFA Charterholders\, CFA program participants\, active duty military service members\, and interested persons dedicated to CFA Institute mission and values. We aim to meet at least six times a year for meetings/socials\, hold a minimum of two CFA Society New York programming events per year\, and actively participate in other veteran organizations at least six times per year. This event will explore the issues of compensation and talent management from the firm perspective. Companies need to understand how to recruit and retain the best talent\, especially in an increasingly tight job market with outside industries such as Tech competing for people once destined for Finance. Owners also need to understand how important company culture\, diversity\, and inclusion is to the mandate of institutional investors. \nJoin Group
