SUMMARY:Quantitative Investing Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:OverviewInvesting is historically an early adopter of new algorithms and technology.  The utility of a new idea is straightforwardly measured in money out over money in. Machine Learning and large-scale computing of unstructured\, novel data provides a new set of methods that were developed first by internet companies. These methods primarily provide an informational advantage in an inefficient market where securities are selected based on their underlying intrinsic value.  In this talk I describe the underlying methods\, provide examples of success using these methods\, and I present a roadmap for the impact these methods will have on markets and investing. \nQuantitative Investing Group×Quantitative Investing Group\nThe Quantitative Investing Group brings together professionals seeking to incorporate cutting edge quantitative investment techniques and alternative data sets in their investing and risk processes. Members include (but are not limited to) discretionary and systematic portfolio managers\, risk managers\, traders and fundamental analysts\, data strategists\, quantitative researchers\, and others. The topic covered range from quantitative alpha generation\, big data as well as alternative datasets\, quantamental signals i.e. the intersection of fundamental analysis and quantitative decision making\, mathematical and statistical aspects of modern quantitative analysis\, use of programming languages or quant tools\, Natural Language Processing\, machine learning for investing and risk management\, theory and implementation of AI in finance and more. \nJOIN THIS GROUP \nCloseGuest SpeakerDr. Michael Recce\, Alpha ROC  \nMichael Recce was the first Chief Data Scientist at Neuberger Berman\, GIC\, the Singapore Sovereign Wealth Fund\, and Point72 Asset Management.   Before taking these roles in the finance industry\, he was head of engineering and the head of modeling and optimization at Quantcast\, where he led a team of machine learning and computer science experts in the design of high volume\, targeted\, real-time bidding for internet advertising.  Earlier in his career\, he was Chief Scientist for Fortent\, and Searchspace that provided market leading transaction monitoring\, risk assessment\, and fraud detection systems for financial institutions. \nDr. Recce was also a product engineering manager at Intel Corporation\, where he led the development of new memory products for the company.  Dr. Recce has published over 60 peer reviewed papers\, and holds eleven patents\, including one for research of a behavioral biometric called dynamic grip recognition\, and is a recipient of the Thomas A. Edison Award [2005]. Dr. Recce has been a tenured faculty member at University College\, London (UCL)\, and a professor of information systems at New Jersey Institute of Technology. SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: Zachary Karabell on Inside Money: Brown Brothers Harriman and the American Way of Power
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nConspiracy theories have always swirled around Brown Brothers Harriman\, and not without reason. Throughout the 19th century\, when America was convulsed by a devastating financial panic essentially every 20 years\, Brown Brothers quietly went from strength to strength\, propping up the U.S. financial system at crucial moments and catalyzing successive booms\, from the cotton trade and the steamship to the railroad\, while largely managing to avoid the unwelcome attention that plagued some of its competitors. By the turn of the 20th century\, Brown Brothers was unquestionably at the heart of what was meant by an “American Establishment.” As America’s reach extended beyond its shores\, Brown Brothers worked hand in glove with the State Department\, notably in Nicaragua in the early 20th century\, where the firm essentially took over the country’s economy. To the Brown family\, the virtue of their dealings was a given; their form of muscular Protestantism\, forged on the playing fields of Groton and Yale\, was the acme of civilization\, and it was their duty to import that civilization to the world. \nIn Inside Money\, acclaimed historian\, commentator\, and former financial executive Zachary Karabell offers the first full and frank look inside this institution against the backdrop of American history. Provided with complete access to the company’s archives\, as well as a thrilling understanding of the larger forces at play\, Karabell has created an X-ray of American power—financial\, political\, cultural—as it has evolved from the early 1800s to the present. Today\, unlike many of its competitors\, Brown Brothers Harriman remains a private partnership and a beacon of sustainable capitalism\, having forgone the heady speculative upsides of the past 30 years but also having avoided any role in the devastating downsides. The firm is no longer in the command capsule of the American economy\, but\, arguably\, that is to its credit. If its partners cleaved to any one adage over the generations\, it is that a relentless pursuit of more can destroy more than it creates. \nCopies of Inside Money will be raffled off to attendees. \nAgenda12:00 PM | OPENING REMARKS \n\n12:05 PM | KEYNOTE PRESENTATION \n\nZachary Karabell\, Ph.D.\, Author\, Inside Money: Brown Brothers Harriman and the American Way of Power \n\n\n12:45 PM |  Q&A \n\n1:00 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \n\nDonna Rapaccioli\, Dean\, Gabelli School of Business\, Fordham University \n\nCo- Sponsored By

SUMMARY:Veterans Roundtable Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Group DescriptionThe Veterans Committee of CFA Society New York\, (a.k.a. Our mission is to establish the foundations from which military veteran members may better achieve leading positions in the financial world. By being active supporters and participants in other veteran organizations\, we are able leverage their networks\, and broaden the reach of CFA Society New York and CFA Institute. Why have such a group? The ethical standards promoted throughout military services worldwide align with Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice of the CFA Institute. Part of what attracts future generations of leaders to the military services is robust support groups that empower access the fullest range of post-military career options\, including the highest levels of finance. Our membership is open to CFA Society New York members\, CFA Charterholders\, CFA program participants\, active duty military service members\, and interested persons dedicated to CFA Institute mission and values. We aim to meet at least six times a year for meetings/socials\, hold a minimum of two CFA Society New York programming events per year\, and actively participate in other veteran organizations at least six times per year. This event will explore the issues of compensation and talent management from the firm perspective. Companies need to understand how to recruit and retain the best talent\, especially in an increasingly tight job market with outside industries such as Tech competing for people once destined for Finance. Owners also need to understand how important company culture\, diversity\, and inclusion is to the mandate of institutional investors. \nJoin Group

SUMMARY:Quantitative Investing Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:OverviewJoin us and Ronald N. Kahn for an interactive discussion on his book\, Advances in Active Portfolio Management by Richard C. Grinold and Ronald N. Kahn. \nOur new book\, Advances in Active Portfolio Management\, is a companion and successor book to Active Portfolio Management. Articles and essays we have written—together and separately\, mainly since the publication of Active Portfolio Management—compose the chapters in this book. Several of these articles won Bernstein Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Awards for top articles in the Journal of Portfolio Management. We have chosen articles mainly along three dimensions: a recap of Active Portfolio Management\, advancing the Active Portfolio Management framework\, and applying the Active Portfolio Management framework to newer problems. For each article or group of related articles\, we have added an introduction reviewing the material with the benefit of time and providing context and background useful for reading the articles. One emerging theme that cuts across these articles is optimal portfolio design. This includes topics ranging from the trade-off between information turnover and trading costs\, identifying where the active opportunities are greatest\, the desirability of separating smart beta from pure alpha\, how we must coordinate risk level and gearing for optimal implementation\, how we can overdiversify multistrategy funds with surprisingly negative consequences in bad market states\, and insights into structuring fees. \nAnother theme that cuts across the dimensions of this book and connects it to our prior book is the track record of quantitative investing. This was a fairly small endeavor in 1995. Today\, quantitative investing is a substantial activity\, especially if we include indexing—non-active quantitative investing. On quantitative active management\, our books and articles have helped democratize the framework and approach and helped inform many new entrants into the field\, sometimes with negative consequences as in 2007 when too much money chased very similar ideas. Beyond measuring quantitative equity assets\, another track record metric is the general level of interest in the field as measured by organizations\, conferences\, and journals now devoted to quantitative investing. By this very different measure\, interest in the field appears healthy and robust. \nThe principles of quantitative active management are centered on the analysis of return\, risk\, and cost. These principles were developed and described in Active Portfolio Management. In Advances in Active Portfolio Management\, we have restated those principles in a more contemporary idiom and presented significant advances in the area of product design\, portfolio analytics\, and dynamic portfolio management. \nThe framework continues to evolve. We now have access to vast new sources of data. The age of big data has arrived. This profusion of data is accompanied by—indeed made possible by—dramatic increases in computing power. Machine learning and other advanced techniques are available. The quantitative active manager who can use these powerful tools wisely will prevail in the difficult challenge of active portfolio management. \nJOIN THIS GROUP \nCloseGuest SpeakerRonald N. Kahn\, PhD\, Managing Director\, is Global Head of Systematic Investment Research at BlackRock. He has overall responsibility for the research efforts behind BlackRock Systematic products. \nHis service with the firm dates back to 1998\, including his years with Barclays Global Investors (BGI)\, which merged with BlackRock in 2009. Prior to joining BGI\, he worked as Director of Research at Barra\, where his research covered equity and fixed income markets. \nRonald Kahn is a well-known expert on portfolio management and quantitative investing. He has published numerous articles on investment management\, and\, with Richard Grinold\, authored the influential book Active Portfolio Management: Quantitative Theory and Applications. Read more
