SUMMARY:Quantitative Investing Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:OverviewTopic: Generalized Compounding and Growth Optimal Portfolios: Reconciling Kelly and Samuelson\nAuthors: Peter Carr and Umberto Cherubini \nWe generalize the Kelly criterion and the growth-optimal portfolio (GOP) concept beyond log-wealth maximization. We show that models of speculative price dynamics with time change require different compounding algebras leading to GOPs that do not coincide with log-wealth maximization. In particular\, in the Variance Gamma (VG) and the Normal Inverse Gaussian (NIG) models the GOP concepts mimick well-known utility models\, namely power utility and the mean variance approach\, with a parameter that\, in both cases\, is the variance of the stochastic clock. The standard log-wealth maximization model is obtained if the variance of the stochastic clock is set to zero. \nQuantitative Investing Group×Quantitative Investing Group\nThe Quantitative Investing Group brings together professionals seeking to incorporate cutting edge quantitative investment techniques and alternative data sets in their investing and risk processes. Members include (but are not limited to) discretionary and systematic portfolio managers\, risk managers\, traders and fundamental analysts\, data strategists\, quantitative researchers\, and others. The topic covered range from quantitative alpha generation\, big data as well as alternative datasets\, quantamental signals i.e. the intersection of fundamental analysis and quantitative decision making\, mathematical and statistical aspects of modern quantitative analysis\, use of programming languages or quant tools\, Natural Language Processing\, machine learning for investing and risk management\, theory and implementation of AI in finance and more. \nJOIN THIS GROUP \nClose

SUMMARY:Chinese Wealth Management Products\, Safe as Cash
DESCRIPTION:OverviewDo the benefits of investing in Wealth Management Products (WMPs) outweigh the benefits of simply holding cash? Hear from an expert panel in the CFA community to discuss the current disclosure of WMPs within China and learn more about the complex risks in the seemingly simple area of cash and cash equivalents on the books of Chinese corporates. \nWhile WMPs may be able to offer yields far above the rates offered by banks\, the range of potential returns varies widely. Some products may even be presented as guaranteed returns. The dispersion of rates on offer should challenge investors to weigh how riskless these purportedly safe assets are. \nRecent troubles at the large financial institution Huarong Asset Management should give investors pause\, as the perennial safety of its bonds quickly shattered in April; its once-riskless paper has reached distressed levels of 55 cents on the yuan. Companies with WMPS that own similarly “safe” bonds must now reexamine the risk profile of their normally innocuous cash hoard. Register now to join CFA Society New York’s Financial Reporting and Analysis interest group for this can’t-miss discussion. \nAgenda6:00 PM | OPENING REMARKS \n\nTimothy Kubarych\, CFA\, Deputy Director of Research\, Partner\, Harding Loevner \n\n\n6:05 PM | PANEL DISCUSSION \n\nModerator \nTimothy Kubarych\, CFA\, Deputy Director of Research\, Partner\, Harding Loevner \nPanelists \nLee Gao\, Analyst\, China\, Harding Loevner \nJohn Garnaut\, Founder\, Garnaut Global \nLeland Miller\, Chief Executive Officer\, China Beige Book International \n\n\n7:10 PM |  Q&A \n\n7:25 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \n\nTimothy Kubarych\, CFA\, Deputy Director of Research\, Partner\, Harding Loevner \n\nAdditional DetailsLearning Outcomes \n\nDecipher tiers of asset disclosures to better understand risk \nApply risk assessment to determine management quality and capital allocation decision making \nExamine the ramifications of WMP exposure on optically simple financial metrics

SUMMARY:Carbon Quotient: Building Accountability for Net Zero Across the Investment Value Chain
DESCRIPTION:OverviewYou’re invited to explore the development and the features of Carbon Quotient™ methodology with experts from accounting\, institutional investors\, and financial regulators. As a growing number of governments\, global companies\, and institutional investors rapidly commit to carbon neutrality or “net zero” by mid-century\, Carbon Quotient™ (CQ)\, a new transition risk tool set\, is well-positioned to meet the need for a comprehensive navigational tool to guide the journey towards net zero.   \nCQ can be used to chart our course\, show our past methodology and current positioning\, and reroute us when we are off track by accurately measuring and reporting our current and predicted climate transition risks and opportunities. CQ works by measuring the transition risk inherent in physical assets that are the source of carbon emissions. By tracking and forecasting progress toward net zero ambitions\, CQ is designed to build meaningful accountability of financial institutions and corporate managers for doing their part to deliver emissions reductions in the real economy.  \nAgenda12:00 PM | WELCOMING REMARKS \n\nAdam Phillips\, Co-Chair – Sustainable Investing Thought Leadership Group\, CFA Society New York \n\n\n12:05 PM| ESTABLISHING CONTEXT FOR FINANCIAL SECTOR GOAL SETTING AND ACCOUNTABILITY THROUGH THE VALUE CHAIN \n\nRobert Schuwerk\, Executive Director\, North America\, Carbon Tracker Initiative\, Inc. \n\n\n12:10 PM | PANELISTS ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS \n\nWhat are the greatest challenges you face in turning the ship towards a zero-carbon economy?\nWhich stakeholders are most important in terms of measuring performance\, and?\nHow do you measure that performance over time?\n\n\nBREAK \n\n12:30 PM | PRESENTATION OF CARBON QUOTIENT \n\nGreg Rogers\, CPA\, Founder\, Eratosthenes \n\n\nBREAK \n\n12:40 PM | PANEL DISCUSSION \n\nModerator \nRobert Schuwerk\, Executive Director\, North America\, Carbon Tracker Initiative\, Inc. \nPanelists \nStathis Gould\, Director\, Advocacy\, IFAC \nEugene Montoya\,  Climate Intelligence Lead\, Public Affairs\, Sustainability Group\, Wells Fargo & Company \nAndrew Parry\, Independent Investment Management Practitioner \nSamantha Ross\, Founder\, AssuranceMark \nAnne Simpson\,  Managing Investment Director\, CalPERS\, Climate Action 100+ \n\n\n1:20 PM |  Q&A \n\n1:30 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \n\nHenrik Jeppesen\, CFA\, Co-Chair – Sustainable Investing Thought Leadership Group\, CFA Society New York \n\nAdditional DetailsLearning Outcomes \n\nLearn to analyze climate change risk  \nCalculate and interpret financial risks from climate change for issuers and investors \nDiscuss and determine how certain asset risks can impact valuation

SUMMARY:Data Visualization and Business Analytics with Microsoft Power BI – Cognitir
DESCRIPTION:OverviewStrong data culture is a sine qua non for organizations in the digital age\, and proprietary data insights are becoming the most important asset for all organizations. Firms that are invested in crafting a compelling\, authentic narrative from their data are uniquely positioned to establish enduring brands and thrive in all market environments. When it comes to communicating such insights for business objectives\, a striking data visualization cannot be beaten. \nDuring a single day\, participants will explore an extensible data visualization framework (Microsoft Power BI) that allows finance and business professionals to create reports and dashboards that leverage their existing data products. Participants will learn how to gather relevant data from sample spreadsheets\, overcome data preparation obstacles\, and build an interactive dashboard that they can publish to the web. \nThis course uses Power BI because Power BI is the uncontested leader in the sector as illuminated by Gartner’s Analytics and Business Intelligence Platform Magic Quadrant. \nAt the conclusion of the workshop\, participants will have developed their own web dashboard that they can readily adapt to their own professional contexts\, and which they can then use to obtain better insights into their own work and/or share it with their co-workers. \nEarly Bird Rate$415 Members | $515 NonmembersEarly Bird Rate expires September 21st \nAdditional DetailsWhat This Course Offers \n\nHands-on data visualization experience Microsoft Power BI and its Power Query engine\nEvery participant leaves with a working dashboard that they can connect to their organization’s data sources\nInsights on how best to automate tedious data workflows with web dashboards\nOverview of data sourcing\, preparation\, and visualization pitfalls\nCourse notes\, certificate of completion\, and post-seminar email support for 1 year\nAn engaging and practical training approach with a qualified instructor with relevant technical\, business\, and educational experiences\n\nWho Is This For \nThe target audience for this course is finance and business professionals\, but the skills we teach here are transferable across many disciplines. SUMMARY:Financing and Counterparty Management: The Changing Landscape for Hedge Funds
DESCRIPTION:OverviewRecent high-profile hedge fund stories have garnered attention for hedge funds and generated concerns over the levels of exposure enabled by banks’ prime brokerage departments. This level of scrutiny recalls changes the industry experienced after the 2008 financial crisis\, when new regulation revised requirements on banks’ prime brokerage departments\, affecting the scope of services they were able to provide to their clients and the relationship with the hedge fund managers more broadly. \nIn the years that followed\, the hedge fund industry went through a process of change and maturity to adapt to the current environment. Now\, in the wake of these new concerns\, the industry once again faces the prospect of renewed regulator interest and potential policy change. SUMMARY:Multistep forecasting for limit order books inspired by machine translation algorithms
DESCRIPTION:OverviewInitially we review the use of deep learning methods from image analysis and natural language processing applied to the problem of forecasting financial time-series. We extend these methods with state-of-the-art techniques from machine translation and thereby propose a novel multi-horizon forecasting model for limit order book data. Our empirical findings demonstrate that this new models outperforms existing methods significantly\, however it is computationally expensive. We overcome this computational bottleneck by employing a cutting-edge hardware accelerator called an Intelligence Processing Unit (IPU). Our results demonstrate that IPUs can offer order of magnitude speed-ups compared with even Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) – the enabling technology that underpins the Deep Learning revolution of the last decade. \nJOIN THIS GROUP \nCloseGuest SpeakerStefan Zohren\nProfessor of Machine Learning in Finance\nOxford-Man Institute and Scientific Advisor at MAN Group \nStefan Zohren is a Faculty Member at the Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance\, an Associate at the Oxford Internet Institute and a Mentor in the FinTech stream at the Creative Destruction Lab at Said Business School\, all at the University of Oxford. He is also a Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute and a member of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems. Outside of academia\, Stefan works as a Scientific Advisor at Man Group.
