SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: Robin Wigglesworth on Trillions - How a Band of Wall Street Renegades Invented the Index Fund and Changed Finance Forever
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThis event is co-sponsored with the CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nJoin us for a lunchtime program with Robin Wigglesworth\, the Financial Times‘ global finance correspondent and author of Trillions\, as he discusses the incredible true story of the iconoclastic geeks who defied conventional wisdom and endured Wall Street’s scorn to launch the index fund revolution\, democratizing investing and saving hundreds of billions of dollars in fees. \nFifty years ago\, the Manhattan Project of money management was quietly assembled in the financial industry’s backwaters\, unified by the heretical idea that even many of the world’s finest investors couldn’t beat the market in the long run. The motley crew of nerds—including Gene Fama\, Jack Bogle\, John McQuown\, and Nate Most—succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Passive investing now accounts for more than $20 trillion\, equal to the entire gross domestic product of the U.S.\, and today is a force reshaping markets\, finance\, and even capitalism itself in myriad subtle but pivotal ways. \nCopies of Trillions will be raffled off to attendees. \nAgenda12:00 PM | WELCOME REMARKS \n\nSris Chatterjee\, Chair\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n\n\n12:03 PM | SPEEAKER INTRODUCTIONS \n\nDavid Cowen\, President\, Chief Executive Officer\, Museum of American Finance \n\n12:08 PM | PRESENTATION \n\nRobin Wigglesworth\, Author\, Trillions: How a Band of Wall Street Renegades Invented the Index Fund and Changed Finance Forever \n\n\n12:45 PM | AUDIENCE Q&A \n\n1:00 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \n\nDavid Cowen\, President\, Chief Executive Officer\, Museum of American Finance \n\nCo- Sponsored By

SUMMARY:Veterans Roundtable Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Group DescriptionThe Veterans Committee of CFA Society New York\, (a.k.a. Veterans Roundtable) is a special interest group dedicated to supporting prior military service members through professional networking and finance education. Our mission is to establish the foundations from which military veteran members may better achieve leading positions in the financial world. We promote CFA Society New York and CFA Institute programs\, while also being highly active in NYC regional and national-level veteran clubs and affairs. By being active supporters and participants in other veteran organizations\, we are able leverage their networks\, and broaden the reach of CFA Society New York and CFA Institute. Why have such a group? The ethical standards promoted throughout military services worldwide align with Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice of the CFA Institute. Part of what attracts future generations of leaders to the military services is robust support groups that empower access the fullest range of post-military career options\, including the highest levels of finance. Our membership is open to CFA Society New York members\, CFA Charterholders\, CFA program participants\, active duty military service members\, and interested persons dedicated to CFA Institute mission and values. We aim to meet at least six times a year for meetings/socials\, hold a minimum of two CFA Society New York programming events per year\, and actively participate in other veteran organizations at least six times per year. This event will explore the issues of compensation and talent management from the firm perspective. Companies need to understand how to recruit and retain the best talent\, especially in an increasingly tight job market with outside industries such as Tech competing for people once destined for Finance. Owners also need to understand how important company culture\, diversity\, and inclusion is to the mandate of institutional investors. \nJoin Group

SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: Daniel Peris on Why Modern Portfolio Theory Fails Investors
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nWe are in a time of enormous risk. Economic growth is anemic\, and political risk to the capital markets is on the rise. In the U.S.\, a generation of white-collar baby boomers is heading into retirement with insufficient assets in their 401(k) programs\, and industrial workers are stuck with materially underfunded pension plans. Against that backdrop\, the investing industry’s current set of practices and assumptions―modern portfolio theory (MPT)―is based on a half-century-old formula that is supposed to deliver the maximum amount of return for a given amount of risk. The trouble is that it doesn’t work very well. \nIn Getting Back to Business: Why Modern Portfolio Theory Fails Investors and How You Can Bring Common Sense to Your Portfolio\, dividend-investing guru Daniel Peris proposes a radical new approach―radical in that it does away with MPT in favor of a more intuitive\, common-sense approach practiced by business people in their own affairs every day: cash returns on cash investments. \nPeris will also discuss being a historian in a profession with a notably low historical sensibility. How did a historian of the early Soviet period end up as a portfolio manager with $25 billion under advisement\, a management team of 12\, and author of three books on dividend investing? \nCopies of Getting Back to Business will be raffled off to attendees. \nAgenda12:00 PM | WELCOME REMARKS \n\nSris Chatterjee\, Professor and Chair\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \nJames Kelly\, Professor and Director\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n\n\n12:05 PM | PRESENTATION \n\nDaniel Peris\, Ph.D.\, Senior Vice President & Senior Portfolio Manager\, Federated-Hermes Inc. \n\n\n12:45 PM | AUDIENCE Q&A \n\n1:00 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \n\nJames Kelly\, Professor and Director\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n\nCo- Sponsored By
