SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: Roger Lowenstein on Ways and Means: Lincoln and His Cabinet and the Financing of the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThis event is co-sponsored with CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nJoin us for a lunchtime talk with renowned journalist and master storyteller Roger Lowenstein\, as he discusses his revelatory financial investigation into how President Abraham Lincoln and his administration used the funding of the Civil War as the catalyst to centralize the government and accomplish the most far-reaching reform in the country’s history. \nLincoln inherited a country in crisis. Even before the Confederacy’s secession\, the U.S. Treasury had run out of money. The government had no authority to raise taxes\, no federal bank\, and no currency. But amid unprecedented troubles\, Lincoln saw an opportunity: the chance to legislate in the centralizing spirit of the “more perfect union” that had first drawn him to politics. With Lincoln at the helm\, the United States would now govern “for” its people: it would enact laws\, establish a currency\, raise armies\, underwrite transportation and higher education\, assist farmers\, and impose taxes. Lincoln believed this agenda would foster the economic opportunity he had always sought for upwardly striving Americans. \nSalmon Chase\, Lincoln’s vanquished rival and his new secretary of the Treasury\, waged war on the financial front\, levying taxes and marketing bonds while desperately battling to contain wartime inflation. And while the Union and rebel armies fought increasingly savage battles\, the Republican-led Congress enacted a blizzard of legislation that made the government\, for the first time\, a powerful presence in the lives of ordinary Americans. The impact was revolutionary. The activist 37th Congress legislated for homesteads and a transcontinental railroad and involved the federal government in education\, agriculture\, and eventually immigration policy. It established a progressive income tax and created the greenback—paper money. While the Union became self-sustaining\, the South plunged into financial free fall\, having failed to leverage its cotton wealth to finance the war. Founded in a crucible of anti-centralism\, the Confederacy was trapped in a static (and slave-based) agrarian economy without federal taxing power or other means of government financing\, save for its overworked printing presses. This led to an epic collapse. Though Confederate troops continued to hold their own\, the North’s financial advantage over the South\, where citizens increasingly went hungry\, proved decisive; the war was won as much (or more) in the respective treasuries as on the battlefields. \nCopies of Ways and Means will be raffled off to attendees. \nAgenda12:00 PM | WELCOME REMARKS \n\nSris Chatterjee\, Chair\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n\n\n12:03 PM | SPEAKER INTRODUCTIONS \n\nDavid Cowen\, president and CEO\, Museum of American Finance \n\n\n12:08 PM | PRESENTATION \n\nRoger Lowenstein\, Financial Journalist and Author \n\n\n12:45 PM | AUDIENCE Q&A \n\n1:00 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \n\nDavid Cowen\, president and CEO\, Museum of American Finance \n\nCo- Sponsored By

Veterans Roundtable) is a special interest group dedicated to supporting prior military service members through professional networking and finance education. Our mission is to establish the foundations from which military veteran members may better achieve leading positions in the financial world. We promote CFA Society New York and CFA Institute programs\, while also being highly active in NYC regional and national-level veteran clubs and affairs. By being active supporters and participants in other veteran organizations\, we are able leverage their networks\, and broaden the reach of CFA Society New York and CFA Institute. Why have such a group? The ethical standards promoted throughout military services worldwide align with Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice of the CFA Institute. Part of what attracts future generations of leaders to the military services is robust support groups that empower access the fullest range of post-military career options\, including the highest levels of finance. Our membership is open to CFA Society New York members\, CFA Charterholders\, CFA program participants\, active duty military service members\, and interested persons dedicated to CFA Institute mission and values. We aim to meet at least six times a year for meetings/socials\, hold a minimum of two CFA Society New York programming events per year\, and actively participate in other veteran organizations at least six times per year. This event will explore the issues of compensation and talent management from the firm perspective. Companies need to understand how to recruit and retain the best talent\, especially in an increasingly tight job market with outside industries such as Tech competing for people once destined for Finance. Owners also need to understand how important company culture\, diversity\, and inclusion is to the mandate of institutional investors. \nJoin Group

SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: Mary Childs on The Bond King: How One Man Made a Market\, Built an Empire\, and Lost It All
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nJoin us for a lunchtime talk with the host of NPR’s Planet Money as she uncovers the deeply investigated story of how one visionary\, dogged investor changed American finance forever. Before Bill Gross was known among investors as the Bond King\, he was a gambler. In 1966\, a fresh college grad\, he went to Las Vegas armed with his net worth ($200) and a knack for counting cards. Countless casino bans and $10\,000 later\, he was hooked: So he enrolled in business school. \nThe Bond King is the story of how that whiz kid made American finance his casino. Over the course of decades\, Gross turned the sleepy bond market into a destabilized game of high risk\, high reward; founded Pimco\, one of today’s most powerful\, secretive\, and cutthroat investment firms; helped to reshape our financial system in the aftermath of the Great Recession—to his own advantage; and gained legions of admirers and enemies along the way. Like every American antihero\, his ambition would also be his undoing. \nTo understand the winners and losers of today’s money game\, journalist Mary Childs argues\, is to understand the bond market—and to understand the bond market is to understand the Bond King. \nCopies of The Bond King will be raffled off to attendees. \nAgenda12:00 PM | WELCOME REMARKS \n\nSris Chatterjee\, chair\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n\n\n12:03 PM | SPEAKER INTRODUCTIONS \n\nDavid Cowen\, president and CEO\, Museum of American Finance \n\n\n12:08 PM | PRESENTATION \n\nMary Childs \n\n\n12:45 PM | AUDIENCE Q&A \n\n1:00 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \n\nDavid Cowen\, president and CEO\, Museum of American Finance \n\nCo- Sponsored By

SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: Gillian Tett on Anthro-Vision: A New Way to See in Business and Life
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nAmid severe digital disruption\, economic upheaval\, and political flux\, how can we make sense of the world? Leaders today typically look for answers in economic models\, big data\, or artificial intelligence platforms. Gillian Tett points to anthropology—the study of human culture. \nAnthropologists learn to get inside the minds of other people\, helping them not only understand other cultures but also appraise their own environment with a fresh perspective as an insider-outsider\, gaining lateral vision. Today\, anthropologists are more likely to study Amazon warehouses than remote Amazon tribes. They have done research into institutions and companies\, such as General Motors\, Nestlé\, Intel\, and more\, shedding light on such practical questions as how Internet users define themselves\, why corporate projects fail\, why bank traders miscalculate losses\, how companies sell certain products\, and why pandemic policies succeed (or not). Anthropology makes the familiar seem unfamiliar and vice versa\, giving a 3D perspective in a world where many executives are plagued by tunnel vision\, especially in fields like finance and technology. \nCopies of Anthro-Vision will be raffled off to attendees. \nAgenda12:00 PM | WELCOME REMARKS \n\nSris Chatterjee\, chair\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n\n\n12:03 PM | SPEAKER INTRODUCTIONS \n\nDavid Cowen\, president and CEO\, Museum of American Finance \n\n\n12:08 PM | PRESENTATION \n\nGillian Tet \n\n\n12:45 PM | AUDIENCE Q&A \n\n1:00 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \n\nDavid Cowen\, president and CEO\, Museum of American Finance \n\nCo- Sponsored By
