SUMMARY:How CECL Can Be Improved and Was It Worth It?
DESCRIPTION:OVERVIEWThis program will explore through the perspective of a user\, a preparer\, and a standard-setter whether the new Current Expected Credit Loss (CECL) accounting rule that replaced the incurred loss method (ILM) was worth the cost of implementation. The objective behind CECL was to make the accounting for credit losses more proactive than it was on the eve of the global financial crisis under ILM where banks were limited to providing only for losses that were estimable and probable. Surprisingly then\, with the risk of recession growing\, banks that adopted CECL are still recapturing rather than building reserves. Bank management’s stock response is to attribute the reserve to what essentially is a black box model. CECL came with an expansion in footnote disclosures that were intended to provide more transparency in public reporting\, but has already proven itself to be more difficult to model than ILM was. \nTopics Covered:\nIncurred Loss Method to CECL\nStandard-setter’s Objectives\nFinancial Statement Preparer’s Costs & User Takeaways\n\nAgenda2:00 PM | WELCOME REMARKS \n\n2:05 PM | PANEL DISCUSSION \nFrederick Cannon\, CFA\, Board Member\, FASB \nGerard Cassidy\, Managing Director\, Head of U.S. Bank Equity Strategy & Large Cap Bank Analyst\, RBC Capital Markets \nLarry Sorensen\, Senior VP & CFO\, Washington Trust Bank \nJoseph A. SUMMARY:Financial Issues Forum presents Alan Blinder on “A Monetary and Fiscal History of the United States\, 1961-2021”
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nJoin us for a virtual event with Alan Blinder\, one of the world’s most influential economists and one of the field’s best writers\, as he discusses his latest book\, in conversation with renowned economic historian and former MoAF Chairman Richard Sylla. In A Monetary and Fiscal History of the United States\, 1961-2021\, Blinder draws on his deep firsthand experience to provide an authoritative account of 60 years of monetary and fiscal policy in the United States. Spanning 12 presidents\, from John F. Kennedy to Joe Biden\, and eight Federal Reserve chairs\, from William McChesney Martin to Jerome Powell\, this is an insider’s story of macroeconomic policy that hasn’t been told before. \nFocusing on the most significant developments and long-term changes\, Blinder traces the highs and lows of monetary and fiscal policy\, which have by turns cooperated and clashed through many recessions and several long booms over the past six decades. From the fiscal policy of Kennedy’s New Frontier to Biden’s responses to the pandemic\, the book takes readers through the stagflation of the 1970s\, the conquest of inflation under Jimmy Carter and Paul Volcker\, the rise of Reaganomics and the bubbles of the 2000s before bringing the story up through recent events―including the financial crisis\, the Great Recession and monetary policy during COVID-19. \n\nThis program is FREE\, but advance registration is required. Registered guests will receive the access link prior to the event. \nAbout the AuthorAlan Blinder is a professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University and a regular columnist for the Wall Street Journal. He served as a member of President Clinton’s original Council of Economic Advisers and then as Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in 1993–1996. Blinder has written scores of scholarly articles\, and authored or co-authored 21 books\, including the best-seller After the Music Stopped (2013) and Advice and Dissent (2018). \nRichard Sylla is professor emeritus of economics and the former Henry Kaufman Professor of the History of Financial Institutions and Markets at the NYU Stern School of Business. SUMMARY:Financial Issues Forum: Bradford DeLong on “Slouching Towards Utopia: An Economic History of the Twentieth Century”
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nBefore 1870\, humanity lived in dire poverty\, with a slow crawl of invention offset by a growing population. Then came a great shift: invention sprinted forward\, doubling our technological capabilities each generation and utterly transforming the economy again and again. Our ancestors would have presumed we would have used such powers to build utopia. But it was not so. When 1870–2010 ended\, the world instead saw global warming; economic depression\, uncertainty\, and inequality; and broad rejection of the status quo. \nEconomist Brad DeLong’s Slouching Towards Utopia–named a “Best Book of 2022” by the Financial Times–tells the story of how this unprecedented explosion of material wealth occurred\, how it transformed the globe and why it failed to deliver us to utopia. Of remarkable breadth and ambition\, it reveals the last century to have been less a march of progress than a slouch in the right direction. \n\nThis program is FREE\, but advance registration is required. \nRegistered guests will receive the access link prior to the event. The first 100 guests will receive a complimentary e-copy of the book. \nAbout the AuthorBrad DeLong is a professor of economics at UC Berkeley\, a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research\, a weblogger at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth and a fellow of the Institute for New Economic Thinking. He received his B.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1982 and 1987. He joined UC Berkeley as an associate professor in 1993 and became a full professor in 1997. \nProfessor DeLong also served in the U.S. government as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy from 1993 to 1995. He worked on the Clinton Administration’s 1993 budget\, on the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade\, on the North American Free Trade Agreement\, on macroeconomic policy and on the unsuccessful health care reform effort. Before joining the Treasury Department\, Professor DeLong was Danziger Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Harvard University. He has also been a John M. Olin Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research\, an Assistant Professor of Economics at Boston University and a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at MIT. \nCo- Sponsored By

SUMMARY:Intro to Python for Business and Finance - Cognitir
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA three-day virtual conference\, Presented by Cognitir. \nPython is a high-level\, object-oriented programming language that is used in a variety of projects ranging from data science and machine learning to backend web development. In fact\, it is one of the most in-demand programming languages today. \nLearning Python is a great entry point into the technical world as the syntax is much easier to learn compared to other programming languages. Because of its syntax simplicity\, Python is a common first programming language for business and finance individuals. \nBut\, do not be misinformed though! Just because Python has easier syntax does not make it any less powerful compared to other languages. Many of the world’s tech majors use Python as part of their technical ecosystems. \nThis three-day\, hands-on introductory course teaches students foundational Python concepts and how to use Python’s popular libraries to complete various technical tasks. Students are presented with Python coding challenges throughout the day to test their understanding of the material. The course culminates with a challenging in-class coding project where students apply concepts taught in the course to create a game. \nRegular Rate\n$519 Members | $623 Nonmembers\nRegular Rate expires March 3rd \nCourse Curriculum×Course Curriculum\n\nIntroduction \n\n What is Python? \nUse cases \n Python vs. other popular languages \n\n\nPython Development Environments \n\nBrief tour of Jupyter Notebook\, Sublime Text Editor\, and other IDEs \n\n\nData Structure Fundamentals ○ Numbers \n\nVariables \nStrings \nPrint formatting \nLists \n Tuples \n Dictionaries \n Sets \n Booleans \n\n\nComparison Operators and Conditionals \n\n If\, elif\, and else statements \nLoops \nFor loops While loops\n Other Useful Operators \nRange \nZip \nIn\n Min & max \nInput \n\n\nImporting Libraries \n\nOverview of common libraries\n\n\nBuilt-in Methods \n\nList methods \nString methods \nDictionary methods \n\n\nDebugging Code \n\nPrinting variables 2/3 \nPylint \nUnittest \n\n\n In-class Project \n Introduction to Graphical User Interfaces \n\n What is a Widget? \n Widget Basics \n Use Cases \n\n\nWrap-Up and Summary\n\nCloseCourse Developers×Course Developers\nDavid Haber \nDavid has led programming workshops at the undergraduate and graduate levels\, at blue chip companies\, and world renowned management consulting firms. \nDavid has experience working with both startups and large corporations.
