SUMMARY:Financial Issues Forum: Sebastian Mallaby on “The Power Law: Venture Capital and the Making of the New Future”
DESCRIPTION:OverviewA co-sponsored event\, presented by CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance. \nInnovations rarely come from “experts.” When it comes to improbable innovations\, a legendary tech VC told Sebastian Mallaby\, the future cannot be predicted\, it can only be discovered. It is the nature of the venture-capital game that most attempts at discovery fail\, but a very few succeed at such a scale that they more than make up for everything else. That extreme ratio of success and failure is the power law that drives the VC business\, all of Silicon Valley\, the wider tech sector and\, by extension\, the world. \nIn The Power Law\, Sebastian Mallaby has parlayed unprecedented access to the most celebrated venture capitalists of all time—the key figures at Sequoia\, Kleiner Perkins\, Accel\, Benchmark and Andreessen Horowitz\, as well as Chinese partnerships such as Qiming and Capital Today—into a riveting blend of storytelling and analysis that unfurls the history of tech incubation\, in the Valley and ultimately worldwide. We learn the unvarnished truth\, often for the first time\, about some of the most iconic triumphs and infamous disasters in Valley history\, from the comedy of errors at the birth of Apple to the avalanche of venture money that fostered hubris at WeWork and Uber. \n\nThis program is FREE\, but advance registration is required. \nRegistered guests will receive the access link prior to the event. The first 100 guests will receive a complimentary e-copy of the book. \nAbout the AuthorSebastian Mallaby is the Paul A. Volcker senior fellow for international economics at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). An experienced journalist and public speaker\, Mallaby contributes to a variety of publications\, including Foreign Affairs\, the Atlantic\, the Washington Post and the Financial Times\, where he spent two years as a contributing editor. He is the author of five books\, most recently The Power Law: Venture Capital and the Making of the New Future. \nMallaby’s interests cover a wide variety of domestic and international issues\, including central banks\, financial markets\, the implications of the rise of newly emerging powers and the intersection of economics and international relations. His previous book\, The Man Who Knew: The Life & Times of Alan Greenspan\, was the winner of the 2016 Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award and the 2017 George S. Eccles Prize in Economic Writing. More Money Than God: Hedge Funds and the Making of a New Elite was the recipient of the 2011 Loeb Prize and a New York Times bestseller. \nCo- Sponsored By

We built a generative model for univariate time series in finance using a Variational Autoencoder (VAE) neural network architecture. We test the model in SP500 and the Heston Model widely used for option pricing and hedging in the financial industry. In both contexts the generative model is able to correctly learn the density according to our qualitative and quantitative tests . Users have to consider the potential non-stationarity in this context and potentially enrich the learning process.Applications of these generative models include risk management\, data augmentation to be used in supervised learning applications and can alleviate the problem of small data in finance. In future research we intend to investigate the multivariate case extremely important for portfolio and risk management as well as testing other generative architectures. \n\n\nhttps://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4343967 \n\nQuantitative Group×Quantitative Group\nThe Quantitative Investing Group brings together professionals seeking to incorporate cutting edge quantitative investment techniques and alternative data sets in their investing and risk processes. SUMMARY:Fiduciary Gap: The Role of Proxy Voting and Shareholder Voting in Effective Client Relationships
DESCRIPTION:OverviewProxy voting has long been a vital tool in issuer corporate governance. Recently\, it has also become an increasingly important tool for asset managers to maximize financial performance for their clients. This debate is all about the balance of the power in the boardroom – issuers\, asset managers or their clients. Given the growing divergence in ESG opinions across political\, economic\, and geographic lines\, how do we balance fiduciary duty by asset managers with social values from asset owners\, and corporate responsibility from issuer companies? How do we bring both process transparency and expert care to asset management clients\, who increasingly demand both performance and experience? How do we propel the World into collective actions of tackling global issues\, while preserving investor protection in individual choices and fair disclosures? In other words\, balancing the risk of green-washing and the risk of green-wishing? For this debate\, we’ve brought together two prominent activist investors\, from each side of the Atlantic\, who have embarked on their own journey of upholding fiduciary duty and maximizing value creation for investors. \nAgenda12:00 PM | WELCOMING REMARKS \nAllen Xiao\, CFA\, CPA\, FCSI\, Co-Chair\, Performance ad Risk Analytics Group \n\n12:05 PM | PANEL DISCUSSION \nModerator \nGeorgia Stewart\, CEO\, Tumelo \nPanelist \nGiuseppe Bivona\, Partner and Co-CIO\, Bluebell Partners Ltd. \nVivek Ramaswamy\, Co-founder and former Executive Chairman\, Strive Asset Management \n\n1:30 PM |  CLOSING REMARKS \nSteven J.
