SUMMARY:2nd Annual Infrastructure Outlook: Data Centers and Student Housing
DESCRIPTION:OverviewAs society has quickly adopted the ‘internet-of-things\,’ 5G\, and cloud computing\, data centers have grown from a niche segment to a critical component of our nation’s Infrastructure. The top four hyperscalers (Microsoft\, AWS\, Google\, and Meta) are expected to invest approximately $1 trillion to keep up with demand\, including from resource-heavy artificial intelligence. Historically this investment was done in-house\, but now external financing is needed to help fill the void. \nSimilarly\, student housing has garnered significant attention and investment in recent years as state and federal governments face increasing budget deficits\, turning to private capital sources to build much-needed accommodation for a growing quality workforce. In the next four years\, over 129 thousand beds are needed in the US at an average price of $100 thousand per bed\, equaling more than $12 trillion of investment. \nThis event will help members understand these two fast growing sectors\, related investment and lending opportunities\, and associated risks. \nAgenda5:30 PM | REGISTRATION \n\n6:00 PM | INTRODUCTION \nTom Schultz\, CFA\, CAIA\, Principal Investment Analyst\, Cornell University Office of Investments \n\n6:05 PM | PANEL DISCUSSION \nModerator \nMichael Ball\, CFA\, \, Vice Chair of the Alternative Investments Group\, CFA Society New York \nPanelists \nEdward Casserley\, Principal\, Stonepeak \nChea Hart\, Principal\, DigitalBridge \nJim Hennessy\, Managing Director\, Harrison Street \nMichael Tranter\, Managing Director\, Infrastructure Finance\, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation \n\n6:45 PM | Q&A \n\n6:55 PM | CLOSING REMARKS \nPatrick Nessenthaler\, CFA\, CAIA\, CRE\, Vice Chair of the Alternative Investments Group\, CFA Society New York \n\nAdditional DetailsLearning Outcomes \n\nLearn what makes these alternative asset classes appealing to investors and lenders.\nLearn who the main data center and student housing owners and tenants are. How do supply and demand look for these sectors?\nLearn the types of data centers (colocation\, build-to-suit\, hyperscale). What is contractually different between these types (tenant lease\, mechanical\, electrical\, plumbing\, and server investments)?\nLearn where data centers are located and why. How are data centers built\, and what are their key design and investment considerations? What are the typical metrics around size? Any ESG considerations?\nLearn which geographic areas have the best growth in university enrollment vs. housing stock imbalance. What local factors enhance or detract from opportunities (credit history\, labor\, supply chain\, NIMBY socioeconomic events\, moratoriums)?\nLearn how are these financed during construction and upon stabilization (infrastructure style\, real estate style\, ABS\, CMBS\, private placement\, etc.).

SUMMARY:Financial Issues Forum presents Gregory Makoff on “Default: The Landmark Court Battle Over Argentina’s $100 Billion Debt Restructuring”
DESCRIPTION:OverviewUnlike individuals or corporations that become insolvent\, nations do not have access to bankruptcy protection from their creditors. When a country defaults on its debt\, the international financial system is ill equipped to manage the crisis. Decisions by key individuals―from national leaders to those at the International Monetary Fund\, from holdout creditors to judges―determine the fate of an entire national economy. A prime example is Argentina’s 2001 default on $100 billion in bonds\, which stands out for its messy outcomes and outsized impact on sovereign debt markets\, sovereign debt law and IMF policy. \nDefault is the riveting story of Argentina’s sovereign debt drama\, which reveals the obscure inner workings of sovereign debt restructuring. This detailed case study describes the intense fight over the role of the IMF in Argentina’s 2005 debt restructuring and the ensuing bitter decade of litigation with holdout creditors\, demonstrating that outcomes for sovereign debt are determined by a complex interplay between financial markets\, governments\, the IMF\, the press and the courts. This cautionary tale lays bare the institutional\, political and legal pressures that come into play when a country cannot repay its debts. It offers a deeper understanding of how global financial capitalism functions for those who work in or study debt markets\, international finance\, international relations and international law. \nThis program is free\, but advance registration is required. Registered guests will receive the link prior to the program. The first 100 guests will receive a FREE electronic copy of the book\, courtesy of the Fordham Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. \nAbout the SpeakerGregory Makoff has been writing about sovereign debt for the past decade and is the author of Default: The Landmark Court Battle over Argentina’s $100 Billion Debt Restructuring. For 21 years through mid-2014\, Gregory worked as an investment banker and debt transaction specialist\, advising companies\, financial institutions and countries\, including Jamaica\, Colombia\, the Philippines and Turkey\, regarding their debt management operations. From January 2015\, he has published papers as a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI)\, and\, in 2015 and 2016\, he worked at the US Treasury on the team that supported the enactment of the Puerto Rico Oversight\, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA)\, the law that has been facilitating the reform of Puerto Rico’s public sector and the restructuring of its debt. Gregory holds a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago (1993) and a BSc in physics and political science from MIT (1986) and is a member of the CFA Institute.

SUMMARY:Financial Issues Forum presents Mark J. Higgins on “Investing in the Financial History of the United States”
DESCRIPTION:OverviewInvestors who neglect to study the past are forced to rely primarily on their life experience to make decisions. This often causes them to overlook powerful\, cyclical forces that repeatedly reshape economies and markets. Investing in U.S. Financial History fills this void by recounting the full financial history of the United States. It begins with Alexander Hamilton’s brilliant financial programs in 1790 and ends with the Federal Reserve’s battle to contain inflation in 2023. Mark Higgins will discuss several of the most important lessons that help contextualize challenges that the United States currently faces. Examples include: \n1. The danger of persistent inflation and the important lessons from the post-Great Influenza pandemic inflation of 1919 and the Great Inflation of 1965-1982 \n2. Key drivers of major financial crises\, the dangers of deep depressions and principles for preventing them \n3. Current threats to US economic prosperity\, such as the persistence of unsustainable fiscal deficits and decline of productivity growth. \nAttendees will discover there is virtually no financial event that is truly unprecedented. It only seems that way because of the limits of our collective memory. This event will provide attendees with a glimpse of how a deep understanding of financial history can improve investment decision-making. Those who read the book will arm themselves with even more powerful knowledge. \nThis program is free\, but advance registration is required. Registered guests will receive the link prior to the program. The first 100 guests will receive a FREE electronic copy of the book\, courtesy of the Fordham Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. \nAbout the SpeakerMark Higgins\, CFA\, CFP is the author of Investing in U.S. Financial History and is a senior vice president within Index Fund Advisors (IFA) Institutional. SUMMARY:Financial Issues Forum presents Jennifer Burns on “Milton Friedman: The Last Conservative”
DESCRIPTION:OverviewMilton Friedman was\, alongside John Maynard Keynes\, the most influential economist of the 20th century. His work was instrumental in the turn toward free markets that defined the 1980s\, and his full-throated defenses of capitalism and freedom resonated with audiences around the world. It’s no wonder the last decades of the 20th century have been called “the Age of Friedman”―or that analysts have sought to hold him responsible for both the rising prosperity and the social ills of recent times. \nIn Milton Friedman\, the first full biography to employ archival sources\, historian Jennifer Burns tells Friedman’s extraordinary story with the nuance it deserves. She provides lucid and lively context for his groundbreaking work on everything from why dentists earn less than doctors\, to the vital importance of the money supply\, to inflation and the limits of government planning and stimulus. She traces Friedman’s long-standing collaborations with women\, including economist Anna Schwartz; his complex relationship with powerful figures such as Federal Reserve Chairman Arthur Burns and Treasury Secretary George Shultz; and his direct interventions in policymaking at the highest levels. Most of all\, Burns explores Friedman’s key role in creating a new economic vision and a modern American conservatism. The result is a revelatory biography of America’s first neoliberal―and perhaps its last great conservative. \nThis program is free\, but advance registration is required. Registered guests will receive the link prior to the program. The first 100 guests will receive a FREE electronic copy of the book\, courtesy of the Fordham Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \nAbout the SpeakerJennifer Burns is an associate professor of history at Stanford University and a research fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution on War\, Revolution and Peace. She is the author of Milton Friedman: The Last Conservative (November 2023) and Goddess of the Market: Ayn Rand and the American Right (2009). An expert on this history of conservative ideas and politics\, she has written for The New York Times\, The Financial Times\, Bloomberg and Dissent\, and she has discussed her work on The Daily Show\, The Colbert Report and elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Financial Issues Forum presents Daniel Schulman on “The Money Kings"
DESCRIPTION:OverviewJoseph Seligman arrived in the United States in 1837\, with the equivalent of $100 sewn into the lining of his pants. Then came the Lehman brothers\, who would open a general store in Montgomery\, Alabama. Not far behind were Solomon Loeb and Marcus Goldman\, among the “Forty-Eighters” fleeing a Germany that had relegated Jews to an underclass. These industrious immigrants would soon go from peddling trinkets and buying up shopkeepers’ IOUs to forming what would become some of the largest investment banks in the world—Goldman Sachs\, Kuhn Loeb\, Lehman Brothers\, J. & W. Seligman & Co. They would clash and collaborate with J.P. Morgan\, E.H. Harriman\, Jay Gould and other famed tycoons of the era. And their firms would help to transform the United States from a debtor nation into a financial superpower\, capitalizing American industry and underwriting some of the 20th century’s quintessential companies\, like General Motors\, Macy’s and Sears. Along the way\, they would shape the destiny not just of American finance\, but of the millions of Eastern European Jews who spilled off steamships in New York Harbor in the early 1900s\, including Daniel Schulman’s paternal grandparents.   \nIn The Money Kings\, Schulman unspools a sweeping narrative that traces the interconnected origin stories of these financial dynasties. He chronicles their paths to Wall Street dominance\, as they navigated the deeply antisemitic upper class of the Gilded Age and the complexities of the Civil War\, World War I and the Zionist movement that tested both their burgeoning empires and their identities as Americans\, Germans and Jews. \nThis program is free\, but advance registration is required. Registered guests will receive the link prior to the program. The first 100 guests will receive a FREE electronic copy of the book\, courtesy of the Fordham Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \nAbout the SpeakerDaniel Schulman is the New York Times best-selling author of Sons of Wichita\, a biography of the Koch family that was a finalist for the Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award. The deputy Washington bureau chief of Mother Jones\, he lives in Massachusetts\, with his wife and sons.
