SUMMARY:Financial Issues Forum presents Philipp Carlsson-Szlezak and Paul Swartz \, on “Shocks\, Crises\, and False Alarms”
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThe shocks and crises of recent years—pandemic\, recession\, inflation\, war—have forced executives and investors to recognize that the macroeconomy is now a risk to be actively managed. Yet unreliable forecasting\, pervasive doomsaying and whipsawing data severely hamper the task of decoding the landscape. Are disruptions transient and ephemeral—or permanent and structural? False alarms are costly traps\, but so are true structural changes that go undetected. How can leaders avoid these macro traps to make better tactical and strategic decisions? \nIn this perspective-shifting book\, BCG Chief Economist Philipp Carlsson-Szlezak and Senior Economist Paul Swartz provide a fresh and accessible way to assess macroeconomic risk\, and a corrective to prevailing thinking and practice. Casting doubt on conventional model-based thinking\, they demonstrate a more powerful approach to building sound macroeconomic judgment. Using incisive analysis built upon frameworks\, historical context and structural narratives—what they call “economic eclecticism”—the book empowers readers with the durable skills to assess continuously evolving risks in the real economy\, financial system and the geopolitical arena. \nThis program is free\, but advance registration is required. Registered guests will receive the link prior to the program. The first 100 guests will receive a FREE electronic copy of the book\, courtesy of the Fordham Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. \nAbout the SpeakerPhilipp Carlsson-Szlezak is Boston Consulting Group’s global chief economist. He also leads the Center for Macroeconomics at the BCG Henderson Institute. Philipp advises executives and investors on the tactical economic outlook and on structural change. Publishing at the intersection of finance\, macroeconomics\, and business\, he is a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review\, World Economic Forum and other business publications. You can read Philipp’s latest thinking in his Fortune.com column. Philipp was previously chief economist at Sanford C. Bernstein\, where he covered the economy and markets for institutional investors across the global asset management industry. Earlier in his career\, he spent more than 10 years advising financial institutions and governments at BCG\, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and McKinsey & Company. \nPaul Swartz is a senior economist and director in Boston Consulting Group’s New York office. He works within the Center for Macroeconomics at the BCG Henderson Institute. Paul previously worked at AB Bernstein (Sanford C. Bernstein)\, where he covered the economy and markets for institutional investors. Earlier in his career\, Paul focused on global macroeconomic issues while working at Goldman Sachs\, the Council on Foreign Relations and Bridgewater Associates. He serves as the vice-chair to the Dean’s Advisory Board (College of Art & Sciences) at Syracuse University.

SUMMARY:Financial Issues Forum presents J. Doyne Farmer on “Making Sense of Chaos: A Better Economics for a Better World”
DESCRIPTION:OverviewWe live in an age of increasing complexity—an era of accelerating technology and global interconnection that holds more promise\, and more peril\, than any other time in human history. The fossil fuels that have powered global wealth creation now threaten to destroy the world they helped build. Automation and digitization promise prosperity for some\, unemployment for others. Financial crises fuel growing inequality\, polarization and the retreat of democracy. \nAt heart\, all these problems are rooted in the economy\, yet the guidance provided by economic models has often failed. Many books have been written about J. Doyne Farmer and his work\, but this is the first in his own words. It presents a manifesto for how to do economics better. In this tale of science and ideas\, Farmer fuses his profound knowledge and expertise with stories from his life to explain how we can bring a scientific revolution to bear on the economic conundrums facing society. \nThis program is free\, but advance registration is required. Registered guests will receive the link prior to the program. The first 100 guests will receive a FREE electronic copy of the book\, courtesy of the Fordham Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. \nAbout the SpeakerJ. Doyne Farmer is an American complex systems scientist and entrepreneur who pioneered many of the fields that define the scientific agenda of our times: chaos\, complex systems\, artificial life\, wearable computing and more. He is the director of the Complexity Economics program at the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School\, Baillie Gifford Professor of Complex Systems Science at the University of Oxford\, chief scientist at Macrocosm and an external professor at the Santa Fe Institute. \nPreviously\, he was an Oppenheimer Fellow and the founder of the Complex Systems Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory. While a graduate student\, he led a cooperative that built the first wearable (and concealed) digital computer and used it in casinos\, successfully beating the house. He was a founder of Prediction Company\, an early quantitative automated trading firm that was sold to the United Bank of Switzerland in 2006. An adventurer and avid sailor\, Doyne finds time to sail his boat\, Eudemon\, and is a founder of Macrocosm\, a new company using complexity economics to guide the green energy transition. \n

SUMMARY:Financial Issues Forum presents Paulina Bren on “She-Wolves: The Untold History of Women on Wall Street”
DESCRIPTION:OverviewFirst came the secretaries from Brooklyn and Queens―the “smart cookies” who learned on the job despite the obstacles. Then came the first Harvard Business School grads\, who\, despite their hard-earned diplomas\, often settled for less. Eventually came the yuppies of the 1980s in power suits and commuter sneakers. \nIn She-Wolves\, award-winning historian Paulina Bren tells the story of the first generations of women who fought their way into the bad-boy culture and lavish opulence of the finance world. If the wolves of Wall Street made a show of their ferocity\, the she-wolves did so with tough-as-nails persistence. Starting at a time when “No Ladies” signs hung across the doors of Wall Street’s clubs and unapologetic sexism and racism were the norm at top firms\, Bren chronicles the remarkable women who demanded a seat at the table. She-Wolves is an engaging and enraging look at the collision of women\, finance and New York from the go-go years to ground zero. \nThis program is free\, but advance registration is required. Registered guests will receive the link prior to the program. The first 100 guests will receive a FREE electronic copy of the book\, courtesy of the Fordham Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. \nAbout the SpeakerPaulina Bren is an award-winning historian and professor at Vassar College\, where she teaches international\, gender and media studies. In addition to She-Wolves\, she is the author of The Barbizon: The Hotel That Set Women Free. She lives in New York City.
