SUMMARY:CFA Society New York Book Club: Mastering the Data Paradox by Nitin Seth
DESCRIPTION:OverviewThe CFA Society New York Book Club® meets every other month and is designed to be an informal group discussion on a multitude of investment related topics. The author is not present as this is simply a discussion on the book of the month to help members further digest the material and meet other like-minded CFA Society NY members. We will generally have 2-3 books planned in advance so members can pick and choose which ones they are interested in reading prior to the meeting. Overall\, a way to build on our investment knowledge and meet other members. \nTitle: Mastering the Data Paradox \nAuthor: Nitin Seth \nThere are two remarkable phenomena that are unfolding almost simultaneously. The first is the emergence of a data-first world\, where data has become a central driving force\, shaping industries and fueling innovation. The second is the dawn of the AI age\, propelled by the advent of Generative AI\, that has created the possibility to leverage the data of the world for the first time. The convergence of these two\, with data as the common denominator\, holds immense promise and the opportunities are boundless. \nThis book provides us with opportunities to push our thinking\, to innovate\, to transform and to create a better future at all levels— individual\, enterprise and the world.

SUMMARY:Intro to Data Visualization and Business Analytics with Microsoft Power BI - Cognitir
DESCRIPTION:There are no prerequisites for this course\, though some may find it helpful to have experience with Microsoft Excel and Power Query\, as Power BI uses similar formulas and frameworks. \nOverviewStrong data culture is a sine qua non for effective organizations in the digital age\, and proprietary data insights are increasingly becoming the most important asset such organizations can accrue. Additionally\, firms that are invested in crafting a compelling\, authentic narrative from their data are uniquely positioned to establish enduring brands\, often thriving in the dynamic markets and uncertain times we find ourselves in. When it comes to communicating such insights in service of a great mission or brand\, there are few things that can beat a striking data visualization. \nOver the course of a single day\, we invite participants to explore an exciting and extensible data visualization framework (Microsoft Power BI) that allows finance and business professionals to create reports and dashboards on top of their existing data products. Participants will learn how to gather relevant data from sample spreadsheets\, overcome common data preparation obstacles\, and build an interactive dashboard they can publish to the web. \nAt the conclusion of the workshop\, participants will have developed their own web dashboard that they can readily adapt to their own professional contexts\, and which they can then use to obtain better insights into their own work and/or share it with their co-workers. \nMember$419if registered by 05/12Non-Member$519if registered by 05/12Course Curriculum×Course Curriculum\n\nIntroduction\n\nWalkthrough- what is Microsoft Power BI?\nSuccess stories and use cases\nHow companies and individuals have used dashboards successfully to become more data-driven\nInitial Setup\nReview of popular resources for Power BI\n\n\nConnecting Data and Transforming Data in Power BI\n\nHow does Power BI connect to our data?\nHow might we clean and transform our data to prepare it for a dashboard?\nWhat is Power Query and how does it work?\nUpdating and modifying data loads\nCustomizing a table we’ve loaded\nCustomizing and adding columns to a table\n\n\nTable Relationships and Data Models\n\nIntroduction to the Relationships pane in Power BI\nHow does one establish relationships?\nCardinality of relationships\nFact and Dimension tables\nBasic schema types (data models) and normalization\n\n\nData Analysis with DAX and M \n\nM and Power Query\nDAX and the Data pane\nWhen to use M and when to use DAX\nCommon M transformations\nCommon DAX transformations\nMeasures\, filters\, and contexts\n\n\nData Visualization\n\nIntro to the Report pane\nTiles\, tabs\, and filters\nCommon visualizations and their use cases\nFormatting a visual\nSlicers and Interactions\nStyling and Accessibility\n\n\nSummative Project\, Exit Review\, and Next Steps\n\nCloseCourse Developers×Course Developers\nJonathan Karp \nJon is a former science teacher and current business analyst at Teach For America\, leading projects focused on data and foundational technologies. SUMMARY:CFA Society New York Book Club: Nuclear War by Annie Jacobsen
\nTitle: Nuclear War: A Scenario \nAuthor: Annie Jacobsen \nEvery generation\, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies\, the safeguards\, the plans\, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return\, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. \nPulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario\, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who have built the weapons\, have been privy to the response plans\, and have been responsible for those decisions should they have needed to be made. Nuclear War: A Scenario examines the handful of minutes after a nuclear missile launch. It is essential reading\, and unlike any other book in its depth and urgency.
