Master Class focuses on the basic building blocks of high yield investment; CFA Society New York’s longest-running conference brings attendees up to the minute on the market outlook and key innovations.
Many public and corporate pension retirement systems worldwide are confronted with lower investment returns on existing assets that currently underfund the ultimate financial obligations of those plans. As a result, pension plans have been exploring different investment strategies and exposure to alternative asset classes. Between December 2017 and March 2018, Greenwich Associates interviewed 80 institutional investors in the U.S., incorporating a mix of asset managers, corporate pension plans and public pension plans. Respondents were asked a series of questions seeking to understand their perceptions of listed options strategies and to explore how institutional investors utilize exchange-listed equity options to achieve investment goals.
Kaplan Professional conjointly with the CFA Society New York Career Development Group presents a series of symposiums offering an introduction to ELEVEN—a Kaplan Professional leadership development program. In this introductory series, keynotes augmented by audience participation will be presented by ELEVEN program director (Milo-Arne Wilkinson) followed by full panel discussions and Q&A with industry leaders. The kickoff event on June 26, 2018 at CFA Society New York's office begins with the topic, “Are We Hard Wired for Change?” All topics will be presented in 45-minute workshops and include quick snapshots of the Eleven methodology. Each topic is highly interactive with a 60% / 40% split over theory and practical with a humorous, storytelling overlay to them all.
Midyear Market Outlook will examine the state of financial markets in a panel format. Panelist will come from a variety of market disciplines, Fixed Income, Equity, Macro Economy and Alternative Strategies as well as buy and sell side. A broad view of many markets will help asset managers and analysts look at opportunities and risks not only in their own markets but also in other markets where an overlap is not always apparent. This multifaceted view will encourage thinking that uncovers links in financial instruments that often are overlooked in siloed focused investment discussions. The notion is financial managers and analysts benefit from exploring and hearing a diverse set views from established market participants.
This event will explore the growing litigation finance market, and associated investment opportunities. Speakers will include practitioners, i.e. investment managers, who provide litigation funding, LP investors and attorneys. Discussion will cover the origins of the litigation finance market, the size of the opportunity and various market dynamics. With this year’s conference, we bring together innovators, academics, investors and investment practitioners to address the current blockchain and cryptocurrency landscape, and most importantly, the impact on investment practitioners. Blockchain was introduced to the world in October 2008, a clever combination of mathematics, cryptography, and economics that underpinned Bitcoin. A year ago, cryptocurrency prices, ICOs, and stories of unscrupulous activity gained the attention of members, unsure if this was innovation or hype. In July 2018, stating “This is no passing fad”, the CFA Institute announced the addition of cryptocurrency and blockchain to the CFA curriculum, beginning in June 2019. According to Greenwich Associates, in 2017 financial services companies spent $1.7 billion on blockchain, with 14% of those surveyed already deploying blockchain solutions. Today there are over 1500 cryptocurrencies, ICOs have raised over $9 billion in 2018, and there are close to 300 cryptocurrency funds. Blockchain and cryptocurrencies are top of mind for regulators, legislators, central banks, the IMF, the World Economic Forum and others.
