James P. Torgerson
James P. Torgerson is Chief Executive Officer of AVANGRID, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), a leading, sustainable energy company with approximately $32 billion in assets and operations in 24 U.S. states.
Based in Orange, Connecticut, AVANGRID was formed in 2015 as the result of the merger of Iberdrola, USA and UIL Holdings Corporation. Avangrid Networks owns eight electric and natural gas utilities, serving 3.2 million customers in New York and New England. Avangrid Renewables owns and operates 7.1 gigawatts of electricity capacity, primarily through wind power, with a presence in 22 U.S. states. AVANGRID employs approximately 6,500 people.
Mr. Torgerson became CEO of AVANGRID in 2015, after having served as President and CEO of UIL Holdings. During his tenure at UIL Holdings, Mr. Torgerson presided over its expansion from a regional electric utility to a diversified energy delivery company serving 727,000 natural gas and electric utility customers across multiple states.
Prior to joining UIL Holdings, Mr. Torgerson served as President and CEO of the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, Inc. (MISO), and was a member of its Board of Directors. He had also previously served as Chief Financial Officer for several natural gas and electric utilities in North America.
Mr. Torgerson is chair of the American Gas Association’s Board of Directors. He also serves on the Board of the Edison Electric Institute.
Before Mr. Torgerson’s move into the utility industry, he served as Vice President for of Development for Diamond Shamrock Corporation, where he also held a number of finance and strategic planning positions.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Mr. Torgerson received a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from Cleveland State University.
