Richard Bookstaber, PhD
Richard Bookstaber holds a Ph.D. in economics from MIT and is a leading expert in financial risk management. He is the recipient of the Graham and Dodd Scroll from the Financial Analysts Federation and the Roger F. Murray Award from the Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance. Since 2009, he was a senior Policy Adviser at the SEC working on the Volcker Rule, a Senior Policy Adviser to the Financial Stability Oversight Council, concentrating on risk management structure and is currently a Research Principal at the Department of Treasury focusing on agent-based models to assess systemic financial vulnerabilities. For three decades he was at the center of some of the biggest crises including the 1987 Crash while at Morgan Stanley, the failure of Long-Term Capital Management while at Salomon Brothers and the 2008 Crisis while in the regulatory sphere. He was also a risk manager at Moore Capital Management and Bridgewater Associates. Mr. Bookstaber is the author of four books including A Demon of Our Own Design (Wiley, 2007) which foresaw the vulnerability of the market arising from growing leverage and complexity and recommended several approaches to reduce risk.
