Thomas Kuh, PhD
Thomas Kuh was Executive Director, ESG Indexes, at MSCI from 2010 to 2017. Under his leadership, the number of ESG indexes, the range of indexed ESG strategies, and assets in index-linked products grew significantly. These benchmarks helped drive expansion of the universe of ESG ETFs, mutual funds and institutional funds available to investors.
In this role, Thomas engaged with leading global asset owners and asset managers on the development and adoption of ESG indexes for investment products and as policy benchmarks. He also spearheaded the launch of innovative Low Carbon indexes and initiated the collaboration with Bloomberg Barclays to develop a family of ESG fixed income indexes.
Thomas joined MSCI in 2010 following the acquisition of the RiskMetrics Group, where he was Head of ESG Indexes. He joined RiskMetrics through its acquisition of KLD Research & Analytics in 2009. During his 17 years at KLD, Thomas held multiple roles, including Research Analyst, Business Development Director and finally Managing Director of KLD Indexes.
Thomas is a prominent member of the ESG community. From 2004-09, he was a director of Sustainable Investment Research International (SiRi) Company, the predecessor of Sustainalytics. From 2000-06, he served on the board of directors of the US SIF, the industry trade organization for sustainable and responsible investors in the US.
Prior to working at KLD, Thomas was a Professor of Economics at Simmons College and a Teaching Fellow at Harvard University. He received his MA and PhD in Economics from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and his BA from Hampshire College.
