Toru Shindo, CFA
Toru Shindo serves as the Chief Investment Officer of the Office of Investment Management for the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF). With more than 22 years at the Fund—including five years as CIO and twelve years as Chief of the Investment Section—he has played a central role in expanding UNJSPF’s assets from USD 29 billion to USD 108 billion, delivering resilient, long-term investment performance for its global beneficiaries.
Under Mr. Shindo’s leadership, more than 70% of the Fund’s assets are actively managed internally, reflecting the Office of Investment Management’s robust capabilities and strategic agility. He leads investment teams across all asset classes and strategies—including Responsible Investments—and oversees both strategic asset allocation and tactical investment decisions. He serves as principal advisor to the Representative of the Secretary-General on investment policy, with a focus on long-term sustainability and fiduciary excellence. In recognition of its leadership in responsible investing, UNJSPF was named to the Fletcher School’s 2024–2025 Responsible Asset Allocator Initiative Leaders List, affirming its commitment to sustainable and ethical asset management on a global scale.
Prior to joining the United Nations, Mr. Shindo served as Director at Deutsche Trust Bank in Tokyo, managing international equity portfolios for public and private pension clients. His earlier career includes roles at Bankers Trust and Nikko Securities, contributing to his deep expertise in global capital markets.
Mr. Shindo holds a BA in Economics from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo and an MBA from New York University. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder.
