Overview

Sophisticated Institutional Investors have looked to achieve returns from private equity investing that are 5% per annum or more above public equity market returns, and even higher for venture capital returns, while allocating 20% to 40% of capital into private strategies.  The success of these investments is crucial to the success of these investors in meeting pension obligations and the missions of many nonprofit organizations.

However, private equity and venture capital returns have disappointed over the last few years, while having a greatly diminished pace of cash distributions.  Some institutional investors have reduced their commitments to new funds, and many fundraising rounds have been smaller and longer to complete. Conversely, niche areas like AI – related venture capital have been hotly subscribed, while some lower middle market buyout managers have thrived.

Has the outlook for investing in private equity and venture capital fundamentally changed?
