The systematic integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into investment strategies, and investment decision making across asset classes, has been gaining traction globally.  Asset owners around the world were early adopters of sustainable investment commitments, taking leadership roles—in their capacity as fiduciaries—to advocate for the achievement of long term, sustainable, risk-adjusted returns, consistent with their fiduciary duty.  As noted by CalPERS, the largest public pension fund in the U.S. with a long-term time horizon, “sustainable investment means taking account of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors across all our day-to-day investment business.”

The 4th Annual National Pensions Conference will feature a high-level discussion on the implications of current market conditions and within this context, analyze trends in best practices in investment strategy, risk management and market engagement. In particular, we’ll explore, in detail, the trends towards sustainable investing and allocation to ESG factors at national pension funds, interest in alternatives and other diversification opportunities within the parameters of each organization’s investment mandates and the embedded opportunities & challenges to their long-term capital management philosophy. While the diversity of these funds and their investment practices makes it hard to paint them in the same brushstrokes, National Pension have generally been yield-seeking, long-term investors which have allocated heavily private markets in the last decade. In that setting, the discussion will also focus on each institution’s long-term approach to asset allocation and trends in investment plans including key risks and headways, benchmarks focused on long-term value creation and evaluation of internal and external managers.

The 3rd Annual Multi Family Office Conference will feature a high-level discussion on major investment themes and global market dynamics from the perspective of multi family offices. Over the past several years, the financial services industry has witnessed the continuing growth of Multi-Family Offices. Multi-Family Offices typically offer comprehensive investment solutions to affluent individuals and families, with some also handling various financial matters for their clients, including budgeting, insurance, wealth transfer, and tax services. The Multi-Family Office Conference will feature a panel of senior Multi-Family Office investment professionals who will discuss the current investment landscape and global market trends from the perspective of Multi-Family Offices. The program is a rare opportunity to hear the investment views of several of New York’s most prominent Multi-Family Offices.

Multiemployer Pension plans, which are operated by groups of companies together with officials of a union that represents their workers, oversee roughly $500 billion in assets under management. Such plans are common in sectors like the building trades, where the workers move from job to job, taking their benefits with them. The trucking, retail and mining industries also have many multiemployer plans. ‎The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation estimates that about 10 million Americans are earning or receiving pensions from the roughly 1,400 multiemployer defined benefit pension plans in the US.‎ While the financial crisis greatly impacted the funded status of these plans, they have recovered significantly since 2009. ‎The conference will explore the perspectives of senior Multiemployer Pension investment professionals and how they are managing not only the volatile equity markets, but also the low interest rate environment.
