3rd Annual Insurance Company Chief Investment Officers Roundtable

Even though we’re no longer in a Zero Interest Rate Policy environment, interest rates remain “lower for longer” in the United States and Insurance companies are faced with some key questions on how to sustain investment premiums, targeted spreads and profitability. Add to the mix, negative to low interest in Europe & Japan, emerging market headwinds, global growth concerns and stock-market volatility, and the opportunities for yield appear to be limited.

According to The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), a majority of U.S. insurance industry investments are in bonds with 53.06% or $2.16 trillion in corporate bonds. Research by the Chicago Fed points to increased correlation of insurers’ stock returns to the US treasury yield compared to pre-2007. Consequently, there is an ongoing shift in asset mix as insurers are reaching out to asset managers with specialties in both traditional and alternative asset classes to maximize total return.

Clearly, this issue has been on the minds of insurance companies’ Chief Investment Officers and their investment teams. 2nd Annual Institutional Investment Consulting Roundtable

The 2nd Annual Institutional Investment Consulting Roundtable will feature a high-level discussion among senior institutional investment consultants. Institutional investment consultants provide investment advice to public and private companies, foundations and endowments looking for help with managing their money, or the money in their employees’ retirement funds. The typical large consultant group usually has a division between the field consultants and the research consultants. The field consultants are the ones who meet with the clients. The research department mainly compiles the performance and other relevant information about the managers. From this the research, consultants provide the “short list” of approved managers that the field consultants use when they are assessing the best portfolio manager for a particular client. Investment consultants are highly influential in the institutional market.

Cerulli Associates’ survey of institutional asset managers indicates that consultant-intermediated business accounts for just less than 60% of 2012 asset flows. Further segmentation of the data by firm size shows that consultant-generated business was greater for smaller firms with $10 billion or less in asset under management, accounting for 75% of these firms’ asset flows. Conversely, asset management firms with greater than $50 billion in AUM generated a little less than half of their new flows were consultant-intermediated.

Multilateral Development Bank Conference

CFA Society New York’s Multilateral Development Bank Conference will feature a high-level discussion among senior Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) delegates from the largest MDBs to discuss their long-term development philosophy and efforts to increase infrastructure investment globally. An MDB is an institution, created by a group of countries, that provides financing and professional advising for the purpose of development. MDBs have large memberships including both developed donor countries and developing borrower countries. MDBs finance projects in the form of long-term loans at market rates, very-long-term loans below market rates, and through grants. MDBs have a strong record of cooperation on infrastructure, working together to design programs and practical tools to help countries attract private investors. The MDBs’ active networks bring together in global expertise on infrastructure policy and design, as well as practitioners engaged in the business of structuring, financing and implementing projects.
